Woeful RMI Ripped Apart By First Class Stamp
By Simon Dutton January 5 2004
City went on the rampage again on Saturday when they made light work of a poor Leigh RMI team. The Blues netted five times in their last outing versus Tamworth and continued their hunger for goals against a Leigh side who have boasted a habit of snatching good results against the bigger teams.
Wright made no changes to the team which mauled Tamworth 5-1, Ben Davies surprisingly remained on the bench as the manager opted for the central midfield partnership of Carden and Carey.

The difference in class was evident to all and it took Chester just 10 minutes to get their noses in front. Leigh defender Harris must have been on another planet as he attempted a criminal back pass, another defender did his best to intercept the ball but the lethal Clare latched onto the loose ball to lash it in the top left corner leaving Kelly with no chance. This was a sign of things to come as City continued to pile men forward and the Railwaymen offered little in terms of goal scoring opportunities.

Regan, who was making his home debut, produced his second assist in as many games as the lead was doubled, he was in acres of space down the right and picked out Darryn Stamp who was unmarked at the far post, he had the simple task of steering the ball in the net from close range. Ex City player Martyn Lancaster captained RMI but he and his defensive allies simply couldn’t contain the home side.

Chester extended their lead even further on 26 minutes as the game was looking more and more like a training exercise for superior City. Smith passed the ball to Stamp who skilfully evaded his marker and curled an effort past Kelly who was making a habit of retrieving the ball from the back of the net. The game was well and truly wrapped up by this point, it was like watching men v boys which will have disappointed RMI manager Phil Starbuck who masterminded an away victory at Hereford a couple of weeks ago.

Wright’s men weren’t content with just three goals, they pushed forward in search for more goals and were unlucky not to go further ahead when Clare burst into the area but could only fire straight at Kelly. Stamp and Clare were causing mayhem and a sorry looking RMI simply couldn’t contain them, the pair combined just before half time only for the post to deny Stamp.

The half time whistle couldn’t have come quick enough for the woeful Railwaymen, they simply didn’t have the quality required to achieve a positive result at the Deva and had the daunting prospect of the second half awaiting them. The home fans were left drooling with the sublime football on offer, but it was hard to determine whether it was a fantastic performance by Chester or an extremely poor showing by RMI.

Starbuck saw his team enjoy a spell of possession after the break but they failed to carve out any chances, something which will need to be remodied if Leigh are again to escape relegation. Chester should have been four ahead on 60 minutes, Clare severed the opposition defence with a pinpoint pass to Stamp but the ex-Northampton striker could only drag his shot wide after finding himself one-on-one with Kelly.

Stamp looked hungry to follow in Daryl Clare’s footsteps and boast a hatrick, he saw a shot fly over the bar and was unlucky with an attempted lob. But the hatrick was inevitable and he finally acquired his third goal courtesy of an excellent cross from McIntyre, City’s top scorer simply smashed the ball past the hapless Kelly.

Chester’s deadly trio of Smith, Stamp and Clare made way for Rapley, Davies and Twiss but the game gradually fizzled out as the game was dead by this point.

And it was two of the substitutes who combined to score Chester tenth goal in two matches, Twiss, playing against his ex team mates, carved open the away backline once again to pick out Rapley who neatly slotted the ball home to net his second goal of the season.

My man of the match goes to Darryn Stamp who scored 3 goals in a performance which saw the top scorer consistently on the rampage against paperweight RMI. It’s now two hatricks in two games for the Blues, Clare of course netted three times at Tamworth.

It was a fantastic way to end 2003 for City, the position the Blues now find themselves is due to the continued backing of Chairman Steve Vaughan and the steady progress the team have made under the stewardship of Mark Wright as City find themselves in a better position than last seasons champions Yeovil were in this time last year.

On this showing, Leigh RMI will do well to avoid relegation to the Unibond league, they will require a substantial improvement if they are to achieve anything from the return fixture against the Blues on New Years Day at Hilton Park.

Hopefully, 2004 could be a great year for Chester, it would be bitterly disappointing if we weren’t to gain promotion this time around, but if more five star performances like this are produced then the only question will be how long will it take City to wrap up the title!
