Rampant City Silence The Lambs In A 5-1 Rout
By Simon Dutton December 24 2003
A Daryl Clare hatrick cemented the three points at the Lamb Ground on Saturday as City made light work of Tamworth to maintain the four point gap at the top of the Conference.
It was a classy display from City who bounced back in style from the defeat against Stevenage. No one predicted an easy game especially after Mark Gee’s side beat Hereford in the previous outing but after the first goal went in they never looked like recovering against a rampant Chester team.

New signing from Hull City, Carl Regan made his debut which meant Phil Bolland had to step down to the bench. Wright also decided to bring Darryn Stamp back into the attack in place of Rapley and Carden found himself back in the starting eleven forcing Ben Davies into a spell on the sidelines. Ian McCaldon was back between the sticks for the first time since the FA Cup defeat after an unfortunate injury to Wayne Brown which will keep him out for 6 weeks.

The game began in scrappy fashion, neither side were carving out many chances and you sensed that whoever made the breakthrough would go on to win the match. And thankfully it was Chester who netted first, a Collins free kick was met at the near post by Ruffer who had to simple task of volleying the ball past Brush to give City the lead.

Brush was becoming more and more busy as the away team began to demonstrate their superiority. Predictably, Chester scored again, this time in the form of Clare who produced an excellent finish which complemented Carl Regan’s excellent ball to release the ex-Boston striker. Mark Wright’s side were firmly in the driving seat and cruising towards the three points which they needed after learning of Hereford’s 7-1 rout of Forest Green the previous night.

Tamworth rarely made McCaldon work and the scoreline was 2-0 to Chester at half time which will have delighted the vociferous travelling contingent of away supporters.

And the Blues continued in the same manner three minutes after the re-start when they extended their lead further. Stamp, who was impressing on his return to the side, picked out the prolific Daryl Clare just inside the area who turned and hooked a well struck volley into the bottom corner leaving Brush with no chance in a moment of sheer class by last seasons top marksman for City.

An alert McCaldon did get some mud on his shirt moments later when he did well to deny Baptiste. The home side did have a decent spell at this point but for all their possession they failed to carve out any real goal scoring chances.

Wright’s men went further ahead on 71 minutes, the busy Alex Smith burst into the area and produced a deft chip to deceive Brush and send the Chester supporters wild. There was simply no way back for the demoralised Lambs but they did grab a consolation goal courtesy of Norman Sylla who did well to head home following a Quailey flick on. Follet and Darby threatened a comeback for Tamworth but were to be denied by McCaldon.

Daryl Clare cemented the victory in the 82nd minute when he lashed the ball into the roof of the net after Brush had fumbled a corner to round off his hatrick which means Clare has now netted seven times in his last five appearances.

The final whistle blew which was greeted with jubilation by the Chester fans who were clearly delighted with their teams display. Mark Gee conceded that his side were defeated by a more classy and superior outfit and the gap in quality was evident to everyone in the Lamb Ground. The Lambs were well and truly put to the slaughter by the brutal Blues and everyone connected with the club will sincerely hope that the team can continue with such performances into the Christmas and New Year program beginning with the visit of Leigh RMI on Boxing Day.
