Match Report – Leigh RMI
By Webmaster
September 7 2002
The Conference league table makes great reading for Chester fans today (well at least till 4.45) after the Blues thought back against Leigh RMI at the Deva Stadium last night.

Chester went into the clash as firm favourites but went behind midway through the first half through a Scott Guyett own goal. Leigh broke down the right and hit a firmly driven cross which Defender Guyett and Wayne Brown got in each others way and the ball ended in the City net with Guyett having the final touch.

City had two chances to equalised before half time, the first fell to Jimmy Kelly who struck a venomous 30 yard strike that Leigh keeper Coburn could only palm over. Minutes later Coburn made a full stretched save from Chris Blackburn. Ryan Sugden rounded Coburn but seen his shot cleared off the line by a sliding defender on the follow up.

Mark Wright’s team talk must of got through to his players as they came out in the second half and dominated to the final whistle. Winger Micky “Trueman” Brown was particularly lively and often made left his markers for dead.

City equalised on 55 minutes when Ryan Sugden headed into the net from short range to the delight of the large Chester support. Chester pressured Leigh and were awarded a penalty when Paul Carden was brought down just inside the area. Mark Beesley stepped up and struck a tame penalty which was kept out by Coburn diving to his left.

Micky Brown had a header glance the outside of the post when he really should of hit the target and Michael Twiss had a goal disallowed against his old club. The game seemed to be destined for 1-1 draw until Beesley turned to hook City to the top of the table.

A crowd of 2,236 warmly applauded the blue and whites after the final whistle.

Chester’s next fixture is away at Hereford United next Saturday. The coach will cost £10. Admissions (Standing) – Adults £9, Concessions £3.
