Mark Wright’s men were expected to take the full 3 points from their trip to bottom of the table Forest Green Rovers and didn’t disappoint.
Wright set a more attackive formation with Steve Brodie lining up just behind the front two for the first time this season. Steve Harkness was moved up into midfield, Carl Ruffer and Mark Beesley also winning back their places.
After a slow, testing opening ten minutes, the Blue or shall I say Red Army settled and from their commanded a game which rarely tested Wayne Brown. Brodie and Beesley made runs down the left and caused the Forest Green defenders problems on more than one occasion.
Chris Blackburn had a volley which was bound for the top corner blocked by the Rovers centre back after impressive build up play.
The goal came midway through the first half when a 25 yard strike was blocked by an arm and a penalty was awarded by the 38 year old whistle blower. The penalty taker wasn’t pre planned as Beesley stepped back before being nominated for the kick. Beesley made no mistake and slotted a side footed strike past Steve Perin.
Chester continued to push forward and Beesley found space down the right and passed into the FGR penalty area and received a lay off from Brodie before firing Chester into a 2-0 lead with a low left footed shot.
The second 45 saw Chester create a number of chances and the introduction of ex Chester striker Carl Heggs for the opponents. Beesley almost scored his hat-trick but headed narrowly over.
Chester moved up to 3rd place yesterday evening but two dreaded Home games are next up.
