Hughes signs 2 year extension

Sparky to stay!
By Robert Stock - Site Asistant Manager January 11 2003
Wales manager Mark Hughes has committed his future to the nation, signing a 2 year extension to his current contract. His contract will now expire in 2007.
A further boost is that 'Sparky' will now take over the job on a full-time basis. Hughes will receive a significant pay rise believed to be worth a basic £175,000 wage in the first year, rising to £250,000 in the final year in 2006. A six-figure bonus will also be heading his way should Wales qualify for the Euro 2004 Finals or 2006 World Cup.

Wales currently sit on top of Group Nine with a maximum 9 points from 3 games thanks to victories at Finland and Azerbaijan and a never to be forgotton home win against Italy.

These results, along with several encouraging friendly results have seen Wales climb up to 52nd in the FIFA World Rankings, after being 100th this time last year. There can be no doubting the importance of Hughes in this phoneix like rise from the doldrums of World football to the position of one of the most exciting and respected nations in world football in a matter of 12 months.

Sparky's signing is a relief to Welsh fans, players and especially the FAW (Football Association of Wales) Several Premiership clubs have been rumoured to have been keeping tabs on Hughes' position in a view to snatching him from the grasps of Welsh football.

The FAW will now receive £250,000 should Hughes move to a Premiership club during the next 4 years and £125,000 should he join a Division 1 club.

Hughes' loyalty and dedication to Wales can now be in no doubt, and the nation can now prepare to unite as we look to complete our march to Portugal for the 2004 European Championships.
