Dave Jones made several changes to the side which lost to Chelsea on Saturday. Paul Ince and Denis Irwin were rested, Luzhny and Rae replaced, Butler was injured, Okoroknwo made his debut, Silas replaced Shaun Newton and Colin Cameron replaced Henri Camara. It was a comfortable if not spectacular performance from Wolves tonight which earned them a place in the 3rd round of the Carling Cup. Alex Rae opened the scoring for Wolves on 36 minutes. The tough-tackling midfielder who replaced Ince as captain hit a sweet 30yrd drive which fizzed into the back of the net past the stranded Andy Collett to the amazement of the small 10,000 Molineux crowd. Gudjonsson and Silas came close as the half ended but neither were able to add a second. HT: Wolves 1 Darlington 0 Oakes replaced Murray in goal for the second half and it took Wolves less than 10 minutes to double their lead. Norwegian International Steffen Iversen jumped with `Keeper Collet and Icelandic International Joey Gudjonsson was able to hammer the ball home from close range. Darlington rarely threatened the Wolves goal and after Newton replaced Gudjonsson, Iversen should have scored. Scotish International Colin Cameron threaded a lovely through-ball to Newton who saw his shot saved, the ball looped up in the air and somehow Iversen missed the opn net from just 6yrds. Leon Clarke made his first team debut 2 minutes from time as he replaced Mark Kennedy but Wolves had finally won their first game of the season. The Draw for the 3rd round of the Carling Cup is on Saturday, 5.30, SKY Sports. |
