Another Bad Day
As Wolves

Thrashed

23rd August 2003| Wolves 0 Charlton 4

Wolves first Home game in the Barclaycard Premiership ended in disaster just 7 days after the defeat at Blackburn. Charlton ran riot, scoring four goals in just 30 minutes as Wolves were unable to reply.

Trying to describe Wolves performance today is almost impossible. There was nothing to the performance, no passion, no composure, no creativity, nothing.

In fairness Jones has terrible injury problems, with Murray, Lescott, Kennedy, Ndah and Miller missing but injuries or not, the performance was simply not good enough.

Oakes started his first match since Matt Murray took over from him last season and the former Aston Villa player is now probably suffering with the same injury as Murray, a bad back after having to pick the ball out of the net 4 times in 30 minutes.

The game was barely 4 minutes old when Wolves were trailing. Colin Cameron headed the ball back to Oakes, but his header was far too weak and Jason Euell could hardly believe his luck has he tapped the ball past Oakes from 3yrds.

It`s a common fact that new Premiership teams get no help from the Referees in the Premiership, but blaming the ref is no excuse, they don`t cause sloppy play, but they do award dodgy free-kicks, especially the one which lead to Charltons second goal.

Jody Craddock was adjudged to have fouled Shaun Bartlett and Claus Jensen hammered a cracking free-kick home from 25yrds.

On 24 minutes Wolves showed defending which would not impress a third division side as Charlton and Bartlett scored a third goal for Charlton.

Scott Parker knocked the ball across the face of the goal and Bartlett, totally unmarked, walked in and tapped the ball past Oakes.

In the 33rd minute the game was put beyond all doubt, as Wolves Fans sank deeper in their seats as the start of what is going to be a very long season got worse.

Scott Parker was again the creator as he slipped a lovely ball through to Bartlett who found himself with a country mile of space and scored with ease from 10yrds.

Euell should have made it 5-0 to the visitors just before half time but as the half-time whistle blew, the players on Old Gold were greeted with boos.

The second half was a matter of damage limitation for Wolves as Jones changed Alex Rae for the poor Silas and Kevin Cooper for Cameron.

Charlton took the foot off the gas, and nothing of not happened until 5 minutes before time.

Steffen Iversen had been replaced by Dean Sturridge shortly before Cooper was fouled on the edge of the Charlton Box. The Referee dished out a straight red card to Scott Parker, however Wolves took no advantage from the fact that Charlton were down to ten men as Cooper himself had to be carried off after the challenge with Wolves unable to make another substitution.

Dean Sturridge came close to giving Wolves a consolation but the referee then ended the misery and blew for full time.

Wolves are going to have to improve, something needs to be done, and fast.

Next up is Manchester United at Old Trafford.......Oh Dear!
