Dave Jones fielded a strong side from the offset against past Champions League contenders Boavista in front of over 10,000 at a sun-kissed Molineux tonight. Wolves started with Murray in the sticks, Irwin, Naylor, Craddock and Butler at the back with Silas, Cameron, Ince (c) and Newton behind Steffen Iversen and Dean Sturridge. It was Wolves who started the brighter and could, and should have broken the deadlock early on. The very impressive and sharp looking Dean Sturridge broke free before dribbling the ball past 4 players into the box, his shot was blocked and was sent into the direction of the inspirational Silas who stumbled on the ball with only the `keeper to beat. Silas was again involved 5 minutes later as Steffen Iversen`s close range header was cleared off the line by Boavista from a quick ball whipped into the danger are by Silas. Iversen was again in the thick of the action 5 minutes before half-time but his 20yrd low drive was brilliantly saved by William in the Boavista goal. HT: Wolves 0 Boavista 0 The second half started like the first with Wolves well on top and Boavista showing little danger with the Wolves back line mopping any dangerous looking balls up superbly. Silas was again involved in the action in the best piece of play from Wolves. The left winger showed pure brilliance as he turned in the centre circle before playing the ball to Iversen who in turn played the ball to Newton who only managed to see his shot come cross deflected for a throw. However Wolves broke the deadlock, Silas again the man involved. His left-footed free-kick from the left was nodded home from close range by Iversen. Silas had another chance to score but his shot was blocked by his own man, Iversen before the man named Silas was replaced to a standing ovation by Kevin Cooper. Dean Sturridge was replaced by latvian Maris Verpakovskis who took his place on the right wing and Shaun Newton was replaced by Henri Camara, Butler was swapped with Isaac Okoronkwo and Denis Irwin with Oleg Luzhny. And it was the Latvian trialist, Verpakovskis who scored the second and final goal. The impressive Kevin Cooper took the ball past 3 Boavista players before superbly playing the ball across the face of goal which was knocked into the empty net by the equally impressive Verpakovskis. Final Score: Wolves 2 (Iversen, Verpakovskis) Boavista 0 Next Stop, The Premiership
