Match Thread: Chelsea vs Wolves

Striking talent

By Wolves
March 10 2019

Wolves travel to Stamford Bridge today in an attempt to complete a double over their rivals for the first time since the 1974-75 season

Nuno Espirito Santo has declared a fully fit squad (again!!) but will be without defender Ryan Bennett who serves the first of a two match ban for ten yellow cards. Romain Saiss is widely expected to drop into defence as cover for Bennett. After the five changes made for last week's game against Cardiff it will be interesting to see if Nuno simply reverts to his 'usual team' for today's game, although Rui Patricio is expected to regain his place in goal.

Michael Oliver - considered by some to be England's top referee - will officiate at today's game which will be screened live on Sky TV, kicking off at 2pm.

Tough match this afternoon. I think that Chelsea have been through their dip and are on the up so we will have to be on our top game to get any positive result. Fingers crossed.

As expected Nuno has named his 'regular' team with Patricio returning in goal.

Line-up: Patricio, Saiss, Coady, Boly, Doherty, Dendoncker, Neves, Jonny, Moutinho, Jimenez, Jota

Subs: Ruddy, Kilman, Vinagre, Gibbs-White, Cavaleiro, Costa, Traore

Very windy at Stamford Bridge this afternoon so both teams will probably want to keep the ball down. Chelsea having the majority of the ball so far, but Wolves well organised and have had one foray forward themselves so far.

Shot from a narrow angle by Higuain brings a stop for a corner from Rui.corner cleared

Doc having to do more defending than usual but doing well so far, Saiss also settled into his role. Wolves finding it hard to find a way out of defence with the ball

Hello everyone! Had a bit of sleet/snow this morning and blowing a gale - can we have February back? Hopefully we can get a win today!

Clash of heads between Coady & Saiss stopping Higuain's header, but both OK.
Raul lucky not give a pen away for h'ball.
Wolves getting chances to break out but need to get it into dangerous position quicker

Not sure we'll get a win but we are coping with Chelsea's considerable threat so far

Excellent play by Raul & Neves feeds Jota in great position but he inadvertently handballs it. Shame

Fantastic support from the Wolves fans - as always loud &'proud.
Good defence by Saiss to deny Higuain. Wolves gradually getting more into the game. Raul Jimenez is really in the thick of things again.
Surprised to hear the half time whistle!! That went very quickly

Plowing a lonely furrow Cheshire.
Watching it , all you could hear was our fans. Not much fun to see, but very effective. If they get frustrated they could make mistakes. Didn’t expect much from this one but you never know.

Looking well organized so far. Rui not been tested at all.

Agreed Andy - only problem is neither has Kepa!!
No changes to either team as the 2nd half gets underway
Jimenez & Jota link up well on left wing but are very quickly surrounded

Saiss catches Hazard & gets a yellow card

Chelsea substitutions not having an impact so far. Wolves are very well organised in defence but there isn't much support available to the front two when they break with the ball

Cheshire wolf
10/03/2019 15:33
Chelsea,Ake their final substitution, bringing Willian on for Jorginho. Soft free kick given against Leander on edge of area but cleared

So close. But disappointed with a draw. Wow

Cheshire wolf
10/03/2019 15:58
All over & Sarri isn't a happy man! Good game by Wolves and unfortunate to concede so late, but we would have taken a point all day long, taking four points from them this season!
That puts us a point clear of Watford in 7th place

Chelsea 1 Wolves 1

That is a good result.

Andy Fincher
10/03/2019 16:06
Good result. Maybe a little fortunate the way the ball went in for our goal but a great break, good ball from Neves and good link up play from Raul and Jota who continue to look as though they are developing a good understanding. I think Saiss deserves a word too, he did well in Bennett's absence.

10/03/2019 16:36
Good result, and its good to see we can grind it out when we need to.
The lads should be proud

I think we were lucky to get the draw, Doc should have been sent off for two yellows and perhaps lucky not to give a pen away but when you consider the quality of the opposition it's a great result and could even have won it.

Andy Fincher
10/03/2019 19:01
To be fair I think a draw was probably a fair result, Chelsea obviously having more possession but we defended well. As good a shot as Hazard's was for their goal, if the referee had spotted the foul on Dendoncker he would have given a free-kick to Wolves and not the corner from which Chelsea scored.

An unusual perfromance from Wolves which nearly got us the maximum points. Some resolute, high energy defending which required a great deal of fitness and mental strength from our players, however we lacked the quantity of marauding breaks we've been used to seeing. Overall a fantastic 3 points, thwarted by a very good Hazard strike. Having said that I thought after all that concentration, Traore swtiched off somewhat in the lead up to the goal and gave Hazard the space he need to set himself up.

Meanwhile up the other end, deapite the general lack of chances, when it mattered the Jota - Jiminez show did us proud again. A scuffed, scruffy goal but the interplay to make the chance was just brilliant!

All of our players put their upmost into that match - congratulations to them.

Anybody see the Sarri interview afterwards on MOTD .... what a bore!

UTW!!
