Match Thread: Wolves vs Liverpool - FA Cup Third Round

The Bosses

By Wolves
January 7 2019

Wolves face Liverpool for the second time at Molineux this season as they meet in the third round of the FA Cup. They will be hoping for an outcome similar to the tie in 2016 rather than in December when Liverpool won 2 - 0  in the Premiership

Wolves could not really have faced a tougher home draw for their first foray into the FA Cup this season than another visit from current Premier League leaders Liverpool. Wolves fans will be hoping that the likes of Mo Salah and Roberto Furmino will be missing from the Liverpool line-up to save them for upcoming European or Premiership matches, whilst also hoping to see Nuno Espirito Santo field a full strength team. Diogo Jota is reportedly back in training and may therefore be considered for a starting position.

Be interesting to see both teams - as said elsewhere ... let's give this competition a real go! Fingers crossed.

Also be interesting to see the crowd. I've just had a look online and there are loads of tickets left. Just the kind of match I've love to go to, not on a Monday night though! The public house calls instead.

Apparently it was Liverpool's demands that led to the tickets being expensive tonight, and presumably that has brought about the low take-up.

Nuno has named a strong team, whereas Liverpool name pretty much a second string.

Wolves line-up:
Ruddy, Bennett, Coady, Boly, Jonny, Dendoncker, Neves, Vinagre, Moutinho, Jota, Jiménez

Subs: Norris, Doherty, Saïss, Gibbs-White, Cavaleiro, Costa, Traoré

The lights show is taking place at Molineux again tonight.

Liverpool line-up

Mignonette, Camacho, Louvren, Fabinho, Moreno, (Curtis) Jones,(debut), Milner, Keita, Shaqiri, Original, Sturbridge

Firmino, Salah & Mane are on the bench.

Referee is Paul Tierney

A minutes applause for the late Bill Slater prior to kick off is beautifully observed

I thought Moutinho might get a rest tonight. He wont stay on long?

Cheshire wolf

Lovren not unable to continue looking like a hamstring problem & will be replaced by Dutch under 17 year old Deana Hoever!!

Liverpool send on 16 year old sub. Ruddy gets first touch (hope not too many of those)

Cheshire wolf

Evening Chicago - I was wondering if you'd be able to watch it over there!

Cheshire wolf

Stupid pull back on Jota by Milner for first yellow card. First long shot by Neves over the bar

I was forced to PAY for a subscription to ESPN+. none of the TV stations has it on!!

Cheshire wolf

Admirable commitment to the cause Chicago!!

Bennett's long throw being utilised again tonight. Debatable offside against Jota

Cheshire wolf

Scrappy stuff so far

Another corner for us

07/01/2019 20:14
Bearing in mind we're playing the Liverpool reserves , our performance so far is pathetic. It has shades of our 0-0 against Birmingham a few years ago screened on BBC

Cheshire wolf
07/01/2019 20:17
Bennett slipped over losing possession in the area giving a chance to Shaqiri, but he shorts wide. Wolves are being too cautious - this is a sub strength L'pool side and we end to get about them instead of constantly passing sideways & backwards

Cheshire wolf
07/01/2019 20:19
You beat me to it Angry!!

Cheshire wolf
07/01/2019 20:22
Jimenez !!!!

Jimenez shoots and in for 1-0 against 'makeshift' LPool

Cheshire wolf
07/01/2019 20:24
Really well taken goal by Raul after the ball was won by Jota. Jota eased Milner out to give Raul his chance and he took it.

Wolves 1 L'pool 0

Liverpool are awful at the moment.
Three added minutes to be played

tbh both teams have been awful lets face it

Cheshire wolf

Wolves pressure causes mistakes in L'poo defence, but can't capitalise

Half time Wolves 1 L'pool 0

chicagowolf
07/01/2019 20:40
If any of these Liverpool subs are trying to impress for regular first team choice they are not doing very well. Vinaigre playing well, and our defense looks, mostly, solid (albeit with a few nerve-jangles).
After Klopp has used his other two subs to get back into into it maybe Milner could get that 2nd yellow

Cheshire wolf
07/01/2019 20:49
Agreed Chicago, and considering Original & Sturridge's contracts are running down and the transfer window is open one would have expected them to put on a good show.

Hope we can set about them now and deal with Salah plus one when they come on!!

Cheshire wolf
07/01/2019 20:53
Jota is looking good and fit tonight - he never gives up on a ball

Cheshire wolf
07/01/2019 20:56
Origi smashes the ball in from the edge of the area through Dendoncker's legs. After my last comment Jota replaced by Cavaleiro

Wolves 1 L'pool 1

Free kick given against Coady right where Shaqiri would want it!
Salah stripped to come on

Ball goes off the upright & Ruddy may have got a touch.

Huge round of applause for Raul as he leaves the pitch. 8 mins plus added time to play

Cheshire wolf

Wolves No.31

not far to travel and we should have a real chance

Andy Fincher
07/01/2019 22:25
It was a poor first half from both teams but in the end, overall we thoroughly deserved the win. If Ruddy got a touch to that free-kick, which seems as though he did, it was a fantastic save. Good to see something like the Ruben Neves we know again although I would have had Jiminez as MOM. Well worth playing a strong side and I hope we do it again in the next round.

Ivybridge Wolf
07/01/2019 22:32
Brilliant result if not a wholly brilliant performance, however we can only beat what is put in front of us and we definitely deserved it. 3 great goals, the cream of the crop from Mr R Neves!!

In terms of the next round, the draw may be slightly disappointing, however we are the side to be aimed at now, and as long as Nuno delivers with the team selection, then we have a squeak in this competition!

Very, very happy! UTW!!

Great result but poor game overall...Liverpool didnt look interested, Klopp doesnt seem to rate the FA cup at all, 2 defeats in a week for Liverpool! oops!
Im glad Nuno is taking it serious, we could go far this year.

Great to knock Liverpool out and fair play to nuno naming a strong team. I dont get all this play the kids give them a chance mantra from the so called big clubs- we have under 23/18 leagues for a reason and the FA cup should not be sacrificed under any circumstances. Apart from city, we can beat anyone else left in on our day and have a great chance of getting to the latter stages with a bit of luck. I'd go so far as to say given our chances of making top 6 is non existent, the cup this season should be prioritised over the league... an FA cup final appearance or the "glory" of repeating what Burnley did and finishing 7th. It's a no brainer.
