Match Thread Barnsley FC vs Wolves

By Wolves
January 13 2018

Wolves go to Barnsley FC this afternoon looking to continue their run of thirteen unbeaten games in all competitions, and ten wins in their last twelve Championship matches.

Barnsley will be looking to avenge their loss at Molineux in August when they conceded a winner from Alfred N'Daiye in the 94th minute.

Wolves revert to their usual line-up, with Helder-Costa retaining his place in the front three.

So we're underway. 5000+ Wolves fans there getting behind the team.

Our referee is Keith Stroud, the little man who has a mixed history with us!!

Romain Saiss has apparently dyed his hair blonde and kept his beard black, so he probably resembles Riyad Mahrez now. I'm sure you can conjure up an image for yourselves!!

Jota robs Barnsley defender, passes to Saiss, but his left footed shot goes over the bar.

Wolves starting to get a bit of momentum going. Costa has had a couple of good runs. What does come over is how well our team are organised, and how well they work together, with the whole team defending especially when an attack breaks down.

Matt Doherty takes a nasty fall causing some concern from team medics, possibly caused by an elbow. Real concern as we have so little cover for his position.
Seems fit to continue.

Doherty concussed? After hearing about Kevin Doyle it is a concern

He seems OK now Chicago. I think he took a knock to the head that just took him a while to cope with.

Costa getting a bollocking from Nuno for failing to take a player on and simply passing back.

Saiss gets a silly booking for grabbing hold of a player - his 8th card of the season!

Costa a bit tentative, and we obviously need to take some risks

He still seems to lack the confidence we saw in him last season, and is reluctant to take players on with the ball.

Barnsley sound well organised and are working hard to contain Wolves. Foul by Jota leads to his 6th Yellow card of the season.

Good attempt by Neves curling one from outside penalty area, but it just clears the bar.

Six minutes added time to be played, presumably due to the injury to Doc and a Barnsley player

First half ends. Star of the show once again seems to be the referee, due to some bizarre decisions.
Wolves need to be more ruthless up front, as they are coping well in defence with any threat Barnsley are posing.

Ready for second half. No sign of any substitutions by Wolves yet, although probably won't be long before we see Cavaleiro.

Yes Ivy a pretty dour match so far - certainly to listen to. 54 minutes gone and no real threat from either side.
looks like Cavaleiro will be on soon.

Once again Costa gets it into the net but is ruled offside by a very fine margin.

Swansea leading 1 - 0 at Newcastle

Cavaleiro on for Costa who has generally been disappointing again. He has had the ball in their net twice, but he has a really poor habit of being offside as he was on both occasions

Good attacking play by Bonatini, he feeds Doc who gets a corner. Bonatini gets another chance but puts it over the bar. Wolves showing more pressure now.
Rafa Mir coming on for his League debut to replace Leo

Tim Spiers states Wolves are not Wolves today.

We’ve had some great results which have continued but the swashbuckling performances seem to have disappeared of late.

C’mon the Wolves! Final push to FT

Derby winning at Brum
Leeds down to ten men & losing at Ipswich
Preston 1 - 1 at Preston

Jota misses from 2 yards out after great work by Cavaliero. Ball bounced just in front of Jota

Barnsley break and have a shot but put it well wide. They are playing gradually deeper and deeper trying to deal with the threat Wolves pose them.

Nothing spectacular yet, he had one effort which landed on top of the goal.

Neves struggling has gone off replaced by N'Daiye. We need him to repeat his last minute goal at the Mol

3 minutes extra time to be played

One more point. The old saying is that to get promoted you win your home games and draw the aways. We have come a long way to be sad at not winning. Off day

That's it Barnsley 0 Wolves 0

Two goals for Wolves chalked off due to offside, but otherwise we failed to find our usual form this afternoon. Barnsley clearly happy with the point - perhaps not unreasonably.
Remains to be seen whether Costa will get the starting position in the next matches as he seems to lacking his old spark and Cavaleiro offers much more when he comes on.

Well... once again I neglected to make my forecast in the Prediction League which will go down as a 0 - 0 draw. Fancy that!!

Well, 0-0 but yer cor win ‘um all.

Positives are the unbeaten run continues, the clean sheet, the size of the the away following and that we remain 12 points ahead of 3rd.

Negative is that we failed to score and from the sounds, not quite ourselves again.

Oh well, Swansea next, then Forest at Molineux - I predict a return to winning ways soon!

Up the Wolves!

Yes, we'll win the next two and, as you say, you can't win them all. At some point we will lose.

Good day out in Barnsley which is a town I know a bit from work. Small northern town just outside Sheffield hit so hard by Thatcher and never quite recovered. Strong wolves following today by coach and train (I joined train in Sheffield with daughter for 30 min trip).

Solid defence again by wolves - Ruddy untroubled throughout.

I agree no shot on target by wolves as reported by BBC, but that doesn't quite tell the story. Jota shot thundered against the crossbar and back out to him, but couldn't quite control the rebound at speed to convert with second hit. Jota could also have converted from one or two other chances when fed at far post by Bonatini, but again didn't quite control.

1-0 to Wolves would have more accurately represented the play in my view, but happy with a point. Clearly the Barnsley players and fans were as well.

I will miss my occasional South Yorkshire away matches when in the premiership next season.
