Transfer Window Round Up

WWFC

So.....the Transfer Window has shut for another season even though I think 5pm on a Monday is a daft time for it to close but hey, who am I to query it? (and yes I am aware of the "extension" the FA has given clubs who can't complete deals at the moment because of the snow.) So assuming that we are done and dusted, let's asses the incomings and outgoing at Molineux.
Players In:

Kyel Reid:

The first bit of business that we concluded was the loan signing of Kyel Reid from West Ham. Born in 1987 (god that makes me feel old) he is the "young and hungry" mould of player that Mick McCarty seems to like in his squad. He has blistering pace and whilst he has only featured in a couple of games for Wolves, he has already shown that his ability from set pieces should prove to be an asset and keep Jarvis and Kightly on their toes.

Nigel Quashie:

Quashie does seem to have been "around the block a bit" and has had quite a number of clubs; West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City to name just 2. He has got both Premiership and Championship experience; gaining Promotion with Portsmouth, whilst being relegated with West Brom, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers. Not exactly young but hardly old either, Quashie has joined on loan; also from West Ham, until the end of the season. He should add that bit of experience that we seem to have been lacking in the past few games, and also give players like Karl Henry, David Jones and David Edwards a run for their money.

Christophe Berra:

The former Hearts captain joined Wolves on Transfer Deadline Day for an "Undisclosed Fee" believed to be in the region of £2.5 million. At 24 he has been a target for Mick McCarthy for a number of months, dating back to the summer when we had a reported £1.5 million bid rejected. Well we now have our man, who will surely be a starter at centre back with Richard Stearman. Personally speaking I think that this is a cracking bit of business, being a full Scotland International can only be a good thing. If we do get promotion, I think our defence should be able to stand up to the test in the Premiership with Elokobi (once fit), Berra, Stearman & Foley in the back 4, not forgetting to mention Wales Number 1 Wayne Hennessey in goal.

Players Out:

Darren Potter:

Potter joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan, finding his first team appearances limited at Molineux. Whilst he enjoyed a good start to his career at Wolves when initially on loan from Liverpool he never really kept up that form and has seen himself fall down the pecking order in recent months. He did however score a goal on his debut for Sheffield Wednesday.

Michael Gray:

My pick last season for "Fans Player of the Season" Michael Gray has been a great servant to the club. Initially starting at left back he moved further up field at the end of last season/beginning of this and has scored 1 goal for Wolves this season in the 3-2 win over Watford at Vicarage Road. To gain regular first team football, Gray moved to Sheffield Wednesday with team mate Darren Potter on a 1 month loan deal, however on Transfer Deadline Day he has made that move permanent. I would just like to say thank-you to Michael Gray as his commitment and work ethic whilst at the club cannot be faltered and I hope he does well for his new club (except against us of cause!)

Darren Ward:

A bit of a flop in most respects, Darren Ward never really got going at Molineux and with the arrivals of Richard Stearman, Jason Shackell and Christophe Berra, Ward found his first team chances very limited at centre back. A loan move to Charlton Athletic came his way in January.

Mark Davies:

A great player when fit, Mark Davies spent roughly 2 seasons out injured and once he got back to full training he was loaned out to Leicester City. During that time many Wolves fans wanted him to be recalled, however it was revealed by Mick McCarthy that Davies has turned down a new improved long term contract and wished to leave the club. Bolton Wanderers came knocking and a deal was done, again for an "Undisclosed Fee." I do feel on this Mark should have given the Wolves some payback seeing as we paid for all his rehab etc. for his injury. We all know however that there is no loyalty in football there days. Whilst some sections of the Wolves faithful blame Mick McCarthy for this departure, how they can expect a player to stay and play if he wishes to believe is beyond me. How is that the manager’s fault?

Lewis Gobern (and Daniel Jones):

Lewis Gobern, who has had his fair share of Injury problems moved to Colchester on loan until the end of the season, to help with their Promotion ambitions. Daniel Jones who had to return from Oldham due to a knee injury is now fully fit and has returned to them, again, until the end of the season.

So all in all a mixed bag there wouldn't you say? Let’s not forget that Stephen Gleeson has signed a new 1 Year deal taking him to the summer of 2010 and 'keeper Shane Higgs has extended his loan deal from Cheltenham until the end of the season to act as cover for Wayne Hennessey and Carl Ikeme whilst Matt Murray undergoes rehab for another injury. With the loan window due to open, we could see a few more transfer dealings at Molineux, one which most fans would like to see is Michael Mancienne to return on load from Chelsea. Is he really needed now and will Chelsea let him return? Only time will tell. We are now at the "Business End of the Season" where teams will be scrapping for points to secure promotion or avoid relegation. For us let’s hope this is our season, and we can gain promotion, who knows maybe as champions. Whatever happens let’s get behind the lads, starting with Norwich at home tomorrow (weather permitting) and take each game at a time. Buckle yourselves in as we are in for a bumpy ride.

Onwards and Upwards!

Good round up Si.

I think we've strengthened the areas needed and we seem to have good cover now in all positions. Hopefully it will set us up nicely for the run in and maintain a competitive edge.

Considering the players we've been linked with I can't knock the managements efforts during the window. Berra seems to be an exciting signing and I hope he lives up to his reputation.
