Goodbye 2008 - Hello 2009!

Mick McCarthy

Who would have thought it? Wolves sitting proudly at the top of the league going into the New Year, scoring goals for fun at times, 2 strikers in the Championships top 5 goal scorers, players all playing for the shirt and during the current Financial Climate, the club is in the safe and secure ownership of chairman Steve Morgan.

For so many seasons, we have had to endure endless dross on the field; players just not caring or were just here for one final payday. Well I am pleased to say those days have finally come to an end, we now have a team I think that we can be proud of. All working for each other, all committed to the cause of getting where we want to be, the Premiership. Yes OK, the past month or so we haven't been playing at the standards we have set ourselves this season. We haven't won over the festive period and certain sections of fans do seem to be getting restless. I for one cannot understand the moaning......we are top of the league, 7 points clear of Birmingham and Reading AND the highest scorers in England. If my facts serve me correctly we also have one of, if not the youngest squad of players in the league, maybe even in the football league? (I am sure one of you will correct me on this!)

Yes it can be annoying when players sometimes don't play at their highest levels, one player that springs to mind is Andy Keogh. He is just like Marmite, you either like him or hate him. Personally I cannot praise the guys work rate highly enough, he really does (to use a popular McCarthy phrase) "put a shift in." His end product at the moment however does need some work, so maybe a months loan might get him some confidence, because fans on his back surely cannot be helping?

So, where do we go from here in 2009? Well we start with a trip down the road to St. Andrews for an FA Cup tie, where hopefully players like Ikeme, Friend, Shackell, Keogh and Vokes can all start and prove a point. From there we have league games against Preston, Bristol City and Reading where hopefully we can strengthen our position at the top of the league and really push on. 2008 has been a great year for Wolverhampton Wanderers, and I feel if the players can handle the pressure and the fans continue with their fantastic support, I am positive we will gain promotion and who knows as Champions??? Mick McCarthy feels that 92 points will be the bench mark to aim for for promotion, however I think that we might need a couple more than that, but time will only tell. So are you sitting comfortably? No? Well why would a Wolves fan have it any other way?

Bring on 2009!

Seven points clear with more than half the season gone is a fantastic achievement. January is a very tough month IMO and if we can maintain the points differential at the end of it I'll be well happy.

As for 2009 - Let's hope it's a good one without any fear

Wolves notoriously play better in the second half of the season. A couple of good additions in January to improve further and we should continue our drive for promotion.

January is a tough month but after that the remaining games all look very win-able, even Blues away, I'm confident about getting a result.

Come on you Wolves
