Wolves hold on to defeat the Swans

Last night, Wolves took revenge over Swansea following the 3-1 defeat at The Liberty Stadium earlier in the season. After a storming start to the season, beating Sheffield Wednesday 4-1, Nottingham Forest 5-1 and Charlton 3-1, Wolves are now proving that they know how to win scrappily- Wolves last 3 victories have all come by a one goal margin.

Worryingly, it’s now 7 games since a clean sheet was kept, in the 2-0 win against Bristol City in September.  Even more worrying, only two clean sheets have been kept all season, and we don’t look like keeping another one in the near future.

Last night, Swansea caused the defence problems, apart from the one goal scored.  Ikeme was forced into a terrific save in the first half, when Mark Gower cut in from the left.  Later, Swansea almost scored one of the goals of the season, a one-touch passing move tore through the defence, before Gower again unleashed a fierce drive from outside the area, which hit the underside of the bar and out, with Ikeme completely beaten.

However, going forward, Wolves looked better than they have at time over the past couple of months.  With Matty Jarvis still sorely missed down the left, Carlos Edwards was given another chance down the wing, and at times impressed, putting in one or two dangerous crosses.  Indeed, it was from one of his crosses that Chris Iwelumo got on the end of, heading back across Artur Krysiak, only to see the effort wiped out by the referee due to a clear push by the big man.

Iwelumo and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake finally look like they are forming a partnership, with one or two nice touches between the two of them.  Ebanks-Blake took both of his goals well, the first one from an Iwelumo assist, when he somehow managed to wriggle his way free from the surrounding defenders before firing past Krysiak.  And it was Carlos Edwards who set up SEB’s second, putting a cross in from the left, which SEB glanced past the despairing goalkeeper.

The midfield defended well, Henry and Jones protected the defence fairly well, although at times looked to be overrun by the Swans midfield.  Personally, I think that these two give the team a better balance in the middle than when Dave Edwards plays, especially when we are playing with two flying wingers.  Edwards though, remains an ideal player to have on the bench, he came on for Kightly last night, and has quite often come on as a second striker, picking up a couple of goals along the way.

On a night with both Reading and Blues losing at Burnley and QPR respectively, not to mention Albion losing their 3rd successive game, this was an almost perfect night.  Were it not for Jason Shackell and Michael Kightly both limping off (Kightly was a doubt before the game anyway), everyone would be happy.  SEB scored his 8th and 9th goals of the season to take him just one behind Ross McCormack in the Championship scoring charts; surely he will beat his record of 23 goals last season.  On the wing, Carlos Edwards had his best game in a Wolves shirt, and with Richard Stearman, Matt Hill and Jody Craddock to be added to the squad over the next couple of weeks, hopefully we can add some defensive steel to our already impressive forward line.
