Hungry Wolves gobble up the Owls

Freddy's Gonna Get Ya
By Tom Bason August 20 2007
Yesterday, Wolves won their points of the season away at Sheffield Wednesday, thanks to goals from Freddy Eastwood, Michael Kightly and substitute Jay Bothroyd. Wolves made two changes from last weekends defeat against Watford, with Freddy Eastwood and Kevin Foley both making their League debut’s after promising first games against Bradford in the week.

Wolves started brightly, with Freddy Eastwood giving Wolves the lead, tapping the ball into an empty net after Andy Keogh saw his effort saved by Owls keeper Andy Grant after 14 minutes.  15 minutes later, Wolves again had the ball in Grant’s net, but Keogh’s well taken finish was ruled out for offside.  However, injury to Gary Breen saw him once again forced off, and Wednesday upped their tempo.  Wayne Hennessey made an excellent save from Wednesday’s danger man Wade Small, but couldn’t stop Small forcing the ball over the line on the stroke of half time, following a world class save from Michael Gray.  The goal was timed 4 minutes into the 2 minutes of injury time shown by the 4th official.

Wolves weren’t behind for long though, and 3 minutes into the second half, Keogh found himself on the left wing.  He found Freddy Eastwood, who showed that his game is more than just about goals, as he held off two Wednesday defenders, before sliding Kightly in on goal.  Grant managed to get something on Kightly’s goal bound effort, but couldn’t stop Wolves taking the lead.  Wolves continued to press, with Kightly creating a chance for Ward at the far post, but an excellent challenge from the impressive Frank Simek stopped Wolves from going further ahead.  Wednesday’s best chance of the second half came as Small held of Foley, but the former Luton man managed to recover and block Small’s effort.  Small had yet another effort with 5 minutes to go, but Hennessey saved well, amid protests from the Wednesday faithful that the ball had crossed the goal line.  Despite Wednesday’s pressure, Wolves always looked dangerous counter-attacking with the pace of Kightly, Keogh and substitute Jay Bothroyd, and it was Bothroyd who wrapped the game up.  Olofinjana, a power-house in midfield, slipped Bothroyd through on goal who finished well, dinking the ball over the Grant.

Overall, it was a very professional performance from a Wolves team who always looking in control of the game, and who appeared to have another gear to move into if needed. As it happened, it wasn’t needed and Wolves returned to Molineux with three points in the bag.
