| Well
its going to go to the final game of the season. Division
Three's second promotion slot is the only thing to play for in the
whole of Scottish Football - will there be widespread newspaper
coverage, will there be a page spread in the tabloids before the match
- even a couple of columns - don't bet on it.
Sons made sure that they kept their
fate in their own hands thanks to a storming second half performance
by which time Peterhead veteran had already got his marching orders
but more of that later.
Two great strikes from Robert Dunn
and Andy Brown plus a well taken goal by John Dillon kept Sons in the
driving seat with Albion Rovers still nipping at our heels.
On the hour mark and with tension
mounting due to Rovers beating Stirling, Robert Dunn, joint man-of the
match with keeper John Wight, took down Joe Robertson's precision pass
from one wing to the other and turned inside the box to rifle home the
opener sending the 1500 Sons fans wild.
Three minutes later and Peterhead
knew their promotion challenge was over when Robertson slipped the
ball to Andy Brown who's precise shot missed the melee of players in
the box and nestled in the top corner. Definitely Bombers best
ever goal for Sons - and what a time to score it.
With five minutes to go Sons three
subs combined as Craig Lynes ran through and after a brave tackle played
Danny McKelvie in only for the youngster to be denied by Ivor Pirie
but the Peterhead keepers parry fell for John Dillon who slammed the
ball home from 10 yards to seal the win and keep the goal difference
up.
This match could have been so
different had John Wight not had an outstanding first half pulling off
a string of brilliant saves. Reactionary stops from the keeper
denied Peterhead what looked like the opener three times. While
at the other end Ivor Pirie was doing the same job for the Blue Toon
as he denied Flannery, three times, Brown and Dunn.
The match turned after 10 minutes
when Smith of Peterhead was stretchered off and on came veteran Shaun
McSkimming. The ex-SPL star immediately took hold of midfield
and Sons were on the back foot from then onwards.
Peterhead then enjoyed their best
spell with the aforementioned John Wight keeping Sons in it, however
the game turned again when a certain Paddy Flannery decided t wind up
Mr.McSkimming. Peterhead captain Stevie King revealed that Paddy
Flannery had been at it all match calling Peterhead a Pub Team - this
obviously had the desired affect when McSkimming shoved Paddy on the
back of the head in front of the ref and was sent-off. Flannery
was booked for this part in the incident - no wonder he never gets
nominated for the Player's Player of the Year Award!
To be honest this turned the match in
Dumbarton's favour and McSkimming should have known better - at this
point in the season if some gamesmanship gets us out of this rotten
division I'll take it - bugger any principles here.
With the score level at half-time and
the news of Albion Rovers winning at Forthbank Sons knew they had to
get something form the match. When the teams came back out it
was clear there was only going to be one winner as Sons ran over the
top of the 10 men before Robert Dunn set us on the way.
One game to go - we win we go up -
its as straightforward as that.
