Republic Of Ireland Squad Announced For Upcoming Games

Irish Manager Trapattoni

18th May, today Republic manager Trapattoni announced his 25 man squad for the two upcoming games. Firstly at Craven Cottage, home to Fulham F.C., versus Nigeria in an International Friendaly on the 29th of May. 22 of these selected will then face Bulgaria in Sofia in the World Cup Qualifier fixture on the 6th of June.

Republic of Ireland Squad:

Goalkeepers
Shay Given - Manchester City
Dean Kiely - West Brom
Keiren Westwood - Coventry City

Defenders
Eddie Nolan - Preston North End
Sean St. Ledger - Preston North End
John O'Shea - Manchester United
Kevin Foley - Wolves
Paul McShane - Sunderland
Richard Dunne - Manchester City
Stephen Kelly - Birmingham City
Kevin Kilbane - Hull City

Midfielders
Aiden McGeady - Glasgow Celtic
Damien Duff - Newcastle United
Darron Gibson - Manchester United
Glenn Whelan - Stoke City
Keith Andrews - Blackburn Rovers
Liam Miller - QPR
Stephen Hunt - Reading
Andy Keogh - Wolves
Liam Lawrence - Stoke City

Forwards
Caleb Folan - Hull City
Kevin Doyle - Reading
Robbie Keane - Tottenham Hotspur
Shane Long - Reading
Leon Best - Coventry City

The most notable inclusions being Kevin Doyle, who's current injury may not be recovered from in time, Trapattoni saying he will not risk him unless he is 100% fit. Also the inclusions of Sean St Ledger, Keiran Westwood, Eddie Nolan, Kevin Foley, Liam Lawrence and Leon Best.

It seems Trapattoni is going to use the Friendly fixture wisely, testing some new blood and comparing previous squads with the current one on offer. An excellent move to see a manager using a Friendly for some real purpose rather than just showing up. Although its hard to see any of the newer inclusions starting against Bulgaria, they will, it seems, be given every chance to stake a claim for a place. It's just up to them to take it.

Still no Stephen Ireland or Andy Reid in an Irish jersey so there is still a lot to be desired regarding the squad. It's a real pity these two situations havent been cleared up and the full artillery would be at the managers disposal.

Maybe sometime in the future eh Senor Trapattoni?
