By Wasim February 6 2012 Newcastle United's Papiss Cisse has been named Man of the Match by Tyne-Talk's resident player rater Wasim4nufc, for his performance in his debut game at the club. Cisse scored the winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Aston Villa yesterday lunchtime marking a great start at the club. Danny Guthrie also scored highly as did Demba Ba and Tim Krul, read on to see how the rest of the team faired...
Player Ratings
Tim Krul (8) - Composed in goal and made some good saves when needed.
Danny Simpson (6.5) - Don't think he was too comfortable dealing with N'Zogbia but worked hard and did some good things defensively as well.
Mike Williamson (7) - Was guilty of playing some Villa attackers on side when getting the off side trap wrong but defended well overall. Gave Bent very little chance of winning anything in the air.
Fabricio Coloccini (8) - Yet again superb at the back. May have been guilty of following the ball in the build up to their goal but I thought he was quality for the most part.
Davide Santon (7.5) - Never afraid to bomb forward and linked up nicely with Jonas. Did what was required of him defensively. A small fault in his game at the moment is his final ball but as a left back that is not is primary role.
Ryan Taylor (7) - Did particularly well in the build up to our opener, albeit he had to then go off injured with what looked like a nasty injury.
James Perch (8)- Making his first real start in this position, I thought he excelled. Made one or two crunching tackles and went about his work quietly otherwise. Deserves credit for his role in today's win.
Danny Guthrie (8.5) - Another splendid performance from our central midfielder. Was an integral part in our game, going forward and looks to be at the top of his game at the moment. Played a lovely cross into the box which led to our goal in the first half and deserved the same when he put in another superb cross in the second half.
Jonas Gutierrez (7.5) - Worked really hard and did many good things in today's game. Firstly it was his early cross which resulted in our winner, secondly he linked up well with Santon and lastly he kept hold of the ball really well particularly in the second half. Also heard he has ran the most out of all the players in the league so far this season which emphasizes his great work rate.
Leon Best (6) - Went off injured early on.
Demba Ba (8) - Took his goal really well and formed a good partnership with Cisse. Just glad to have him back for the team seems to be better going forward when he is there.
Substitutes
Papiss Demba Cisse (8.5) - An impressive debut and probably allows him to edge the man of the match award from our two central midfielders. Scored a wonderful goal but it was his work rate and all round game which also caught the eye, especially as it was his first game in this league. Long may it continue.
Gabriel Obertan (7.5) - Caused Villa some problems once he was introduced and seems to have benefited from the time out of the team as well as from scoring in midweek. Deserves a start next week.
Shola Ameobi (6.5) - Kept the ball in the corner towards the end which helped a bit to see us home.

Re: Player Ratings v Aston Villa (H)
Guthrie (MoM), Perch, and Krul were the stars for me. Sure, Ba and Cisse got the goals and headlines, but they could have been a bit sharper (Cisse should have put away the near post header from Guthrie's chip). Krul made numerous close range stops, and Perch put himself about while still keeping it simple. But Guthrie put on a show with his creativity. I've said it before, but he's in the type of form he showed in the second half of the Championship season. I know Cabaye and Tiote are our first choice midfield, but Danny needs a new contract now, especially if we're looking at having an extended season in 2012-13.

It could be argued that Cisse had excellent delivery and a couple of good chances to score before he eventually did.
However, it was his first match in this league, his debut for us and he came on much earlier than he probably expected to.
Add to that his cracking goal, and I'm prepared to more than forgive him for snatching at a couple of chances earlier in the game.
Looks like he could be a great player for us, touch wood.
Also, I'm glad he scored when he did because you know how we are, as soon as we go ahead in a game we get nervy and try to defend the lead instead of going for the jugular, which I can never fkn understand!
So we had to defend the goal for a shorter period.
It drives me nuts but its just the way it is, we're better than that and Guthrie totally dominated the second half until we scored.
When we play offensively and are going for it, we generally dont concede too many anyway so why do we always try to hang onto a 1 goal lead??
Fair enough if we don't score another, but we should be more comfortable at home. Am I wrong??
Guthrie head and shoulders above the rest but Krul and perch have to be close runners up!
Perch has shown this is his position to play and hopefully we never have to pay him in defence again!
Bit harsh giving Jonas the same score as Obertan, jonas ran his socks off for 90mins assisted a goal, won us numerous free kicks and defended well! Obertan did better than he usually does but very little compared to Jonas!
Willo was good at clearing the ball as ever and i was slightly dissapointed with colo making 2 or 3 silly mistakes which could have cost us!

Forgot to mention Perch. Guthrie wouldn't have done as well if he didn't have a reliable partner.
I actually thought that Obertan's learning from Jonas about how to get into the team. He tracked back better than I've ever seen from him, including at ManUSA.
Probably would have given Williamson 6.5 and Colo 7.5. They switched off for the goal something awful. Keane starts running and nobody even tries to pick him up...

This is why I hate Keane.
Everyone thinks he's so super fantastic, defenders get nervous and give him FAR too much respect but that's gotta be one of the easiest goals he's ever scored.
So incredibly lucky and that stupid celebration just makes me wish I had a fully loaded bazooka at the game..

Oh yeah, that celebration was crap. A somersault? Really? Is this tumbling in grade school?
I'd be disappointed if I didn't score that goal. I don't really think it's about Keane though. Not picking up runs is the #1 mental mistake midfielders & defenders make.
