Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Aston Villa
By Tyne-Talk
February 4 2012
Newcastle United play host to Aston Villa tomorrow lunchtime live on Sky Sports. Villa travel on the back of two wins, two draws and two defeats from their last six games, whilst Newcastle go into the game on the back of four wins and two defeats from their last six in all competitions.

Alan Pardew’s men are holding out for a Champions League place with a 4th place fight, whilst Alex McLeish would be happy with a move up into the top half of the league after a relatively disappointing season so far. That said, he has only seen his side lose two games from their last twelve away games.

Papiss Demba Cisse is expected to make his debut for the club at St James’ Park and will partner Demba Ba upfront after they both returned from the African Cup of Nations earlier this week. As a result Leon Best and Shola Ameobi are expected to drop to the bench, having provided sufficient cover in Ba’s absence.

Yohan Cabaye will serve his second game of a three match ban on the side-lined after seeing his appeal against an FA charge of violent conduct dismissed on Wednesday.

Steven Taylor (Achilles), Sylvain Marveaux (groin) and Sammy Ameobi (knee) are all long term injuries.

Alex McLeish is likely to be without Gabriel Agbonlahor who is suffering from back and hamstring spasms, whilst Marc Albrighton (thigh), James Collins (calf) and Chris Herd (ankle) are all likely to be side-lined.

Fact: Newcastle beat Villa 6-0 in this fixture last season.

Fact: Newcastle are unbeaten in their last five games at home to Villa and Villa have failed to score in their last three games at St James’ Park.

I'm saying 1-0 to snow.
But if the match goes ahead I'm thinking 3-1 to the toon.

If the game goes ahead I think 2-0
I hope they play it I'm looking forward to seeing our new strike partnership in action.
We are not guaranteed to be on tv if the match is played at a later date.

I'll ship over some proper snow removal equipment (we haven't needed it over here! +9 degrees Celsius in late January and positive temps in February in Canada? I'll take that every year!) Get the lads in long sleeves, break out the orange ball and 2-1 to the Toon!

If the game is postponed (and not played midweek), is Cabaye out for Sunderland?

I hope Cisse turns out to be Fantastic. I've just booted Rooney off and added Cisse to my Tyne-Talk Fantasy Football team.
Almost bottom of that league so worth a go.

Looks like snow hasn't stopped the match.

C'mon Newcastle (Sm152)

Unfortunately Raylor has had his foot kicked off. Not dirty, he & Warnock got to a 50/50 @ the same time. Looks like another forced change.

Hmm. That's a yellow Simmo's gotta take but it could be telling. Especially with Raylor out of the squad.

Injury update: Raylor to have scan but early indications are that it isn't a break. Nothing on Best though.

A lot of ball watching in defense, again. Our central midfield has to stop collapsing before them.

Did anyone notice just before their goal there was what sounded like the half time whistle from the crowd! I hope it didnt make anyone in the defence turn off! I heard it clear as day on the TV.

Why do the crowd do that especially when people are on the attack???

I heard that Andrew, but hope the lads are professional enough to have a look at the ref, who actually signaled that play was continuing. It looked like he was giving advantage when there was no foul.

Heskey on for Zog. I'm happy to see him off if I'm honest.

It's straight 4-3-3 now and they're going for it though.

Bent into the book.

I didn't get to catch the second half, but I thought Guthrie was sensational in the first. Krul was solid the first half, and had no chance to stop Keane's goal. Perch was working hard, but lacked in possession. Glad to hear that Raylor didn't break anything, and can't wait to see Cisse's maiden.

Re: Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Aston Villa
Last year we had 11 wins the entire season. Today gave us a dozen. Spurs finished 5th, last year, with 62 points. That means we're just 20 away with 14 games to go. Looking at the fixture list, I think we should get anywhere from 5-9 more wins. Either way, top 7 should no longer be the "goal" but rather the "expectation" to finish the year.

Brilliant result and I will remember Cisse's goal for a long time to come. I viewed it from the Leazes corner and as soon as he hit it you knew it was going only one place.

Villa had chances but we still did well. Krul kept us in it a few times and Guthrie was class. He really has stepped up this season. The more I see him though he is more of a challenger for Cabaye than Tiote if you know what I mean.

We had so much more about us with the two Dembas back.

Just maintaining the current pace-and assuming we get virtually nothing off City, Arsenal, LFC and Spurs-we should still get to low/mid-60s in points.

Europe is a very realistic goal, and we won't have current European competition or cups to wear out the squad.
