Mariappa Turns Down Wigan Deal: Newcastle Back In Contention
By Tyne-Talk
January 31 2012
Watford defender Adrian Mariappa has turned down a move to Wigan Athletic, despite the two clubs agreeing a fee said to be nearer the £4million that Watford were looking for. It was reported earlier that Newcastle had been outbid by Wigan and that the 25 year old was on his way to them to discuss personal terms. That apparently never happened and Newcastle are now back in contention.

Contrasting reports suggest that Wigan were the ones to pull the deal, which would suggest a problem, or saving face.

Either way, it is unlikely that Newcastle will up what Pardew referred to earlier as their "Final bid" so it could come down to Watford accepting the player is to leave or making him stay at the club.
