Player Ratings v Sheffield United
By Wasim
November 3 2009
Tyne-Talk's player rater Wasim4nufc has given his personal opinion on the team's performance during last night's game against Sheffield United. Man of the match goes to goal keeper Steve Harper who had a great game. Agree with these ratings? Have your say on the forum below.

Player ratings vs Sheffield United

Steve Harper (8) - Made one error in the first half, but boy did he make up for it in the second half with two outstanding saves. Certainly a contributing factor in us getting the 3 points today!

Danny Simpson (6) - Not quite his best game. Gave away some needless fouls, while he did not get forward enough.

Fabricio Coloccini (7) - Started off a bit shaky, but improved as the game went on and by the end of the game it was evident that we missed him while he was injured. He was holding onto the ball for too long sometimes, but not as much as before, so it shows he's learning.

Tamas Kadar (7) - For only his 2nd start, it was an impressive performance. He was good in the air, and showed elegant ball control, to prove that his one for the future. I may be tempted to start him in midfield if I picked the team, for he would not be out of place there. Needs to work on his long balls though.

Jose Enrique (8) - Contender for Man of the Match, with endless energy down the left. Made some great runs in the second half. A quality player we need to keep fit for the entire season, as he's that important!

Jonas Gutierrez (6.5) - Worked hard as always, although did not attack his man enough for me, knowing his ability.

Nicky Butt (6) - Gave the ball away far too much, yet again. Helped out in defence though, so deserves credit for that.

Alan Smith (6) - Did not stand out, although he kept plugging away as always.

Ryan Taylor (6.5) - His set pieces were poor and away from home that needs to be better. He did however take the shot that led to the goal, so well done to him.

Kevin Nolan (7) - I thought he was quite involved and seemed to enjoy his free role off the striker. Worked tirelessly as well while almost scored with a neat chip.

Andy Carroll (7.5) - He played the lone striker really well. Caused the Sheffield United defenders problems all night and was a hand full. Unlucky not to score with a quality header, just before the goal. Helped out in defence as well!

Substitutes

Nile Ranger (6.5) - Showed one or two neat touches, and is a good option off the bench.

Marlon Harewood (N/A) - Not on long enough to be rated.

Man of the Match: Steve Harper

Pretty fair ratings pal. Would have gave Carroll an 8/8.5 even without a goal as he never stopped all game. He also did a couple of late runs with the ball. His confidence is building if he can keep his feet on the ground. Would love to see him play alongside a quick forward running the channels.

Butt and Smith should not play together. There would be more than enough bite in midfield if one of them was holding and either Guthrie/Barton (when fit) pushing on and Taylor on the right.

Thought Jose was immense and at this level could probably play centre half if we were desperate. Would have to be better than Simpson in that position.

Even if Enrique could play center half at this position, he's our only left footed defender with pace. Keep him at Left Back.

Here are my ratings:
Steve Harper (8)
Danny Simpson (6)
Fabricio Coloccini (7)
Tamas Kadar (7)
Jose Enrique (8-8.5)
Jonas Gutierrez (6)
Nicky Butt (6)
Alan Smith (7)
Ryan Taylor (6.5)
Kevin Nolan (7)
Andy Carroll (8.5-9)

Pretty much the same, agree with Biffins, Carroll was good on the night. Not to sure enrique could play at CD though, the only thing that let him down las night was his crossing but he did win loads of corners for us

I agree with you on that last point, wouldn't mind seeing Lovenkrands, or a quick striker come on loan, to partner him, as he's excellent in the air, and it will give us an extra dimension.

As for the Enrique point, I understand what you trying to say, but I think that is a more long term prospect, if we have other left backs in the squad. For now though, he really is playing well and he seems like the best left back in the league!

Totally agree with you lads, it was more if we were desperate then it gives Tozer a easier bedding in.

Jose is looking great and maybe the year in this league might do wonders for him IF we go up. For whatever reason though he loves playing with Jonas and gets up far more when playing with him. Maybe its because Jonas plays a bit deeper than say Loven or other typical wingers.

I thought Enrique was excellent, I'd have given him man of the match.

Kadar done well and will do the lad a world of good for up and coming games, so when we do have to use him again then I would be happy if he knocked in another performance like that.

Yeah, Taylor will be a massive player to have back but I wouldnt rush him with the type of injury he has had.

Also wouldnt put Kash back in over Kadar either.

The only thing that worries me is if we get the hype with Kadar, and too much pressure gets put on the lad.

I remember after the West Brom game that some people we talking about Krul being the number 1 goal keeper and putting Harper on the bench.

Lets give them games but hand pick them and not every week. I know before anybody points out that nobody is calling for Kadar to start just trying to point something out
