Sir Alex Confirms Owen Signs For Manchester United
By Tyne-Talk
July 3 2009
Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Michael Owen has signed a 2 year contract with Manchester United after passing the clubs rigorous medical. Details of the deal are yet to be released but Sir Alex confirmed the news of the manutd.com and it is understood he has signed the striker on a pay-as-you-play deal.

Fergie released a statement saying;

"Michael is a world class forward with a proven goal scoring record at the highest level and that has never been in question.

Coming to Manchester United with the expectations that we have is something that Michael will relish."

The 29 year old said of the opportunity;

"I had just begun to talk to other clubs when out of the blue Sir Alex phoned me on Wednesday afternoon, invited me to have breakfast with him the next morning during which he told me that he wanted to sign me.

I agreed without a moment's thought. This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I intend to seize it with both hands.

I am now looking forward to being a Manchester United player and I am fortunate that I already know so many of the players here. I missed pre-season last year and am pleased that I will be starting at Carrington from day one.

I want to thank Sir Alex for the faith he has shown in me and I give him my assurance that I will repay him with my goals and performances."

Owen's departure leaves Newcastle United FC £110,000 a week in wages better off as they look to recruit for the coming season.

It's not often Fergie gets it wrong but he's dropped a major bo**ock here. What was he thinking? At least he had the sense to sign him on a pay as you play deal. Even if he stays away from injury i feel he'll be lucky to get a full game in. Can't see him lasting much more than a year at old trafford.....

To be honest there's not a lot of risk involved. It's not like he's going to be their star player like he was for us, they won't be expecting much from him.

Also, if he's rubbish he's on pay as you play, so if he's not good enough to be played Fergie doesn't need to worry.

We took a far bigger risk in signing Owen for £17m on wages of £120,000 a week compared to Man. United signing him on a free and only paying him £20,000 whenever he plays.

He won't start anyway, so it doesn't matter if he gets a full game in-he's the replacement for Tevez.

To be honest I was one of the fans who was delighted when we signed Owen. I'm sorry it didn't work out. I agree with i!
It's no risk at all for United and I can see Owen doing well there, he's going to get a lot better service than he did here.

Good bit of business if you ask me. He'll get plenty service and then we'll see if he still has it.

He'll probably play most of the cup games and games when other strikers are rested. He might even hit top form and become a first team starter.

Watch this space.

I personally think he will start, as Man U haven't had a centre forward in ages, Fergie has probably thought Berba has been a waste of money and with losing Ronaldo they will play a different way.
