Not the kind of player I want to be sold. It's the younger guys who don't cost much week-to-week we need to be keeping. Edgar showed promise, and losing him now is awful as we don't have quality center backs unless you have Beye play out of position.

Losing Edgar is a huge mistake as waffles said he is young and not on a huge amount of money. In the championship I thought Edgar would have been one of the players I would want to see in the side, week in week out

Pretty disappointed about him leaving, it seems the players that I want to keep - the likes of Edgar, Beye, S Taylor, Bassong - are the wants that are deemed likeliest to leave.

It's always the same, hopefully though Shearer will be appointed soon which will make Taylor and Beye stay, can't see Bassong staying though

I thought Edgar would have wanted to stay with him coming through the ranks and would have got first team football but then he is going to get premiership football so can't really blame him

This is a horrible portent. Young player, doesn't merit much in the way of wages, would get lots of burn in the Championship...still he leaves. Not good.

We can't even be arsed to give a player who could've started for us a contract of £15,000 per week, tops? I hate this club sometimes.

The toon are f@ck*ed in the head, Edgar would have been on low wages, Taylor a couple of seasons back got his contract messed around and we could have lost him. However we will pay sh@t loads per week on total cr#p

he was out of contract, but maybe he should have waited longer for a decent offer from nufc? no-one knows what state the club will be in by the end of the summer. if edgar had any feeling for the place he would have stuck around, stalled burnley, and waited to see what his chances were later in the summer.
i can only assume he knew that shearer wasnt a big fan, otherwise why leave so early in teh summer?

Whats shearer got to do with it?

He is a young player who will play more first team footy at a higher level?

if edgar felt valued at the club he would have given them a chance to improve the contract offer. that wont happen until the club is sold, and when the club is sold shearer will be the manager. if edgar thought shearer would improve the offer, he would wait and see what happened before committing himself either way. signing for someone else, he has ruled out playing for newcastle, so i am presuming he either wasnt bothered, or didnt see it happening because shearer didnt want him. or perhaps burnley said they would withdraw the offer if he dint take it quickly.

i reckon he would have stayed given a decent offer, and so does his agent, who said so publically. since there are two months to go til deadline day, something has given the player the impression that no improved offer will be forthcoming in those 2 months, even though we all know that the club is likely to be sold this summer.

by the way mm, do you remember reading that shearer had decided not to offer mark donniger a new contract a few weeks ago? suggests that he has had an input into which out of contract players get offered new deals, and which do not.

Yeah its ridiculous though, dont take it personally,

Shearer is not the manager, the clubs not been sold,

Donninger is still on the books, & they were rumors of who shearer would release, youngsters always get released regardless of whoever is manager, I also read Man Utd would get rid of Darron Gibson, Danny Simpson & some of their youngsters!

Thats what happens when you cant fit them into your plans!

as for fitting players into your plans, when you cant afford any of your top 15 wage earners, your plans are sketchy are best! we offered edgar a contract, which he declined on the grounds that he wanted more money. to call an end to negotiations so early suggests edgar wanted out, for any of the reasons i gave above. i put them there in response to the idea that we had let edgar down in some way. if we told him to take it or leave it, fair enough. if he didnt want to hang around to negotiate, thats all down to the player.

Even more rationalization, lmk? NUFC lowballed him, and the club is in utter turmoil. He's supposed to negotiate with a relegated club with no manager? When a PL club wants to sign him? The reality is we had a good young player, potentially a starter in the championship, poached by a newly promoted side. That's it.

Edgar made the right decision to further his career. I don't take it as a slight to NUFC or Shearer. Only the most rabid NUFC supporter would have made any other decision.

Edgar could have waited for the takeover but Burnley are going after a few people so he probably thought if I don't take it now then it may not be on the table in a few weeks as Burnley will get somebody else.
If offered the chance 99% of players are going to choose the premiership over the championship

Edgar was poor cover at best, so I'm not fused he's leaving. He never broke into the first team and probably never would.

Taylor is only a year older and much better.

Edgar leaving gives room for the likes of Kadar...

He was passable or better in his few PL appearances: a potential starter in the CCC. And given that Bassong has moved up and that our only prospects at center half are Tozer and Kadar, we didn't need to "make room" for anyone. That's another rationalization.

For the record we offered him a new contract, but he wanted more.


"It wasn't anything special," was his agents response to the contract offer, which is ironic as that that's my assessment of Edgar.


Giving Sh!te players more than they are worth is what got us in this mess.

Ramage was never good enough... Edgar could have played a role for us but is gone and do you really blame him - he wants more first team action and has never had that at Newcastle.

If we hadn't let some youngsters go over the last few years we could've had a home grown back 4 for next year...

they go six weeks without pay at this time of year, standard contract. and its not about two months, its about the lads future. repsect to burnley, but he wont be in the prem long, will he?

i cant go along with you describing burnley as the pl club here. if edgar signs there for 5 years, at the end of five years which of the two clubs would you expect to have played more premier league games over that period? i may sound like i expect us to get straight back up, i dont. i may sound like i think burnley are already down, i dont. but we will be restored soon enough, and burnley are not going to be up there for long. a sad fact is that you need silly money being pumped in at a loss, and/or a huge stadium to make it in our top league, burnley have neither.

i have to agree with those who say egdar is no great loss, but someone capable of playing who already knows the club would have been preferable to bringing someone else in to fill the squad. there is always a risk with such a signing. we now need another defender, as well as the obvious mids and forwards

You've gone from rationalization to counterfactual statements. They are in the PL. We're not. That's reality. All your protests to the contrary make me think of Leeds, Charlton, Southampton, Palace, etc. Who imagined Wigan would stick around this long? OK, as a PL fan I can agree that Edgar is nothing special. But we're going to have to settle for that in the ccc, in fact it's what we should be going for-players for low wages who are nothing special but graft hard and have enough talent to get the job done.

Oh, and I would rather have had Ramage for cover than Cacapa. Considering the wages, and that we were relegated anyway, I may have chosen him over Coloccini.

you know the unbalancing effect cash has on our game, look how much hull spent to scrape up by virtue of the craziest season ever at newcastle. we tried our hardest to go down and hull nearly saved us! i'd imagine it will be hard for burnely, is the point.
at this vey moment in time we are still in turmoil, granted. if the buyout is at such an advanced stage as repsected onlookers such as george caulkin at the times suggest, we could be looking at a fresh start very soon, one which will leave us, with all repsect again to burnley, with much greater short/medium term potential than them and half of the teams in the premier league, never mind outside of it. that would make us the ambitious choice, should any player be considering playing for either newcastle or burnley.

But you do speculate a lot. Regardless of who's in charge, most PL followers I know predicted Wigan would be relegated in their first season in the PL, then their second...and so on. I'm guessing you'll find a lot of people saying the same about Burnley, whereas football has taught me-among other things-that I am not a swami. Regarding the takeover: I'll believe it when I see it, when it's official and not a moment before, regardless of what any pundit says.

We do have greater potential than Burnley, long term, sure. But as you say it's not like David Edgar is the new Rio Ferdinand so this may be one of his few-if not his only-chance to establish himself as a top flight player. Or simply to experience it, week in and week out. I'm guessing that informed his decision more than NUFC's longterm potential. That's exactly what I'd expect, as he's not a local lad.

people say that about every promoted team, and they are often right - they sink again quickly. some come up with the cash to pay for a few better players, and make a fist of it. but the extra tv money of recent seasons has meant that wages are even higher, so the risk of spending all your tv money and still going down is greater. wigan have dave whelan, as i mentioned, an advantage over similar clubs.
the ones who stay up at all are the exceptions, the ones who stay up longer than a couple of seasons are the ones with extra financial backing. we'll see where burnley fit in soon enough. the best footballling side of those promoted are often the ones who struggle most, witness west brom, and before them watford as well as others

anyway dude, of course i speculate, what is this place for? whinging about how bad things are? i'm as sick as anyone, but i'd be sicker still if that was all we talked about

Delaney who just signed for Ipswitch, Yeah so where was i, if thats the case should we not be going round trying to get all shearers potential transfer targets signed up! seen as he would have had a say in those too, or do we just leave it till its too late and let other clubs sign them?

No because he has no say in anything at the moment because he is not our manager!

Its just we are all getting way ahead of our selves wondering whats gonna happen with the club, and who will come in, but the reality is until something happens its just speculation paper talk!

i said shearers opinion of the player would have been known to the player. if egdar knew shearer wasnt keen, he knew not to hold out on the off chance shearer would become manager. others, such as taylor, may well be holding off from making decisions on their future until they know whether shearer takes over.

Aye, its a shame for him as he would have played a few more games in the Championship. Saying that he still wouldnt have been a first team starter, possibly giving Danny Simpson some competition or standing in for Jose when he got injured. He wouldnt have displaced Taylor or Colo and Williamson has been class since coming in.

Last summer, he would have been my second choice CB, because Colo was poor. After Beye was sold, had Edgar stayed he would have been the first choice RB in all likelihood. Colo came on strong this year, very strong, and showed the type of play that suggests he can be a solid CB in the PL. He was not prepared last year (no English ability, and not aware of how physical the game was).

However, after the year Colo, Simpson, and Williams have had, there has been no significant loss with Edgar. Kadar has come on strong and put in two very strong performances against Barnsley and Boro. It would be nice to have both Edgar and Kadar, since both are so young, but Taylor is only 24, and if we can bring in Wheater this summer, we'd have three young center backs.

dont forget how many partners colo had last year, and how many times he was in and out of the team himself. having a fairly settled back four has helped him a lot this season, as it has helped the whole team. our two bad periods results wise (october and january) came when we had two or more of the main four missing, and there was no coincidence either time

Yeah, hopefully we can build on that defence for next season as well. I know its not the premier but its nice to have a back five you have confidence in.

Sure Hughton has to take another bow for this with him being a defender in his time.
