Boro's 1-1 draw against West Ham in the 5th round of the FA cup provided some promising moments that we can hopefully take into the league with Stewart Downing getting his first goal of the season.
The team were unfortunate not to steal a win at Upton Park, and in reality it is probably a shame that we didn't hold out for one as that could have proved to be a massive boost to the season, although a win would have been perhaps overly fortunate for the team. It was interesting to see Downing in a new role behind the lone striker, Alves with Johnson being played in the left midfield slot and credit must be given to Southgate as it looked to have paid off.
However it is still evident that we are unable to keep a clean sheet which is worrying when considering our chronic inability to score goals, although this was not down to the performance of Brad Jones who was once again superb between the posts. The replay will be held at the Riverside on the 24th of February and while we must focus on league survival it would perhaps be nice to go on a bit of a cup run.
