Future Red Devil Fred had to watch from the sidelines as Brazil kicked-off their World Cup in Russia with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland.

The midfielder is set to join United from Shakhtar Donetsk for a fee reportedly in the region of £47million.

25-year-old Fred, however, missed out on the chance of playing in Brazil's opener in Russia, after picking up a knock in training.

Fred was an unused substitute throughout, as Brazil were frustrated by an impressive Swiss display.

Barcelona's Philippe Coutinho had given Brazil the lead in Rostov-on-Don with a fine curling strike.

However, Switzerland pegged back the five-time champions as Steven Zuber headed home shortly after the break, with the underdogs fully deserving of a positive result.

Brazil's pre-tournament form has made them a lead contender with many for glory in Russia, but the underwhelming performance from Titi's side on Sunday will raise plenty of question marks.

United-bound Fred will hope to add to his tally of eight caps as Brazil return to action on Friday against fellow South American nation Costa Rica.
