Former Manchester United defender Gordon McQueen has put the names of two men with Old Trafford connections in the frame for the vacant Scotland managerial job - Walter Smith and Joe Jordan.

McQueen spoke to Sky Sports News after Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill rejected the opportunity to take the reigns at Scotland.

65-year-old McQueen speculated that financial motivations could be behind O'Neill's decision not to swap Windsor Park for Hampden Park.

He said to SSN presenter and his daughter Hayley: "I'm surprised at him turning it down. In my opinion, it's still a very good job and there's plenty of people who'd be willing to take it.

"It's all about money nowadays. Michael O'Neill has not taken the Scottish job because of that; but there'll be plenty of people willing to take his place, that's for sure."

McQueen favours three names - two with strong links to the Red Devils - for the vacant post.

He added: "Ally McLeish springs to mind. McLeish has done it before. There's Walter Smith available ... I think Joe Jordan and Walter Smith would compliment Scotland really well."

Both Smith and Jordan have strong links to Manchester United. Forward Jordan was at Old Trafford between 1978 and 1981, where he notched up 126 appearances and found the net on 41 occasions.

Smith, 69, was United's assistant manager in 2004 before going onto enjoy a second managerial spell with his country.

Bookmakers think McQueen could be right with McLeish - as he is the new favourite for the role, after O'Neill's rejection of the opportunity. However, Smith and Jordan are rank outsides at 66/1 and 80/1 respectively, far bigger odds than even Sir Alex Ferguson - priced at 40/1 to take the job.

The new boss will be charged with leading Scotland to a first major finals since 1998, and will be involved in the inaugural Uefa Nations League concept.
