Dirk Kuyt scores
United’s hopes for silverware now rest with the Premier League title and the Europa League following an FA Cup defeat at Liverpool.
A largely disappointing encounter was settled with only minutes left as Kuyt took advantage of some poor United defending to fire home an Andy Carroll flick.
The home side had broken the deadlock after 21 minutes. United’s struggling ‘keeper David De Gea will take criticism for failing to command his penalty box, as Steven Gerrard’s corner ended up getting nodded home by Agger.
United, who were without frontman Wayne Rooney, restored parity 18 minutes later through Park. The South Korean met Rafael’s cross with power and accuracy to beat Pepe Reina.
The second-half was largely lifeless and a replay at Old Trafford looked on the cards before Kuyt popped up with two minutes to go to score his first club goal since September.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men bossed possession for long periods during the game but struggled to carve out clear cut opportunities and will not add to their tally of 11 FA Cup triumphs this season.
After dumping City out of the Carling-sponsored League Cup on Wednesday, this result caps off a fine week for Kenny Dalglish’s men. United will be eager to bounce back at home to Stoke on Tuesday.
