Premier League Round-Up: Saturday 21st January, 2012

Big point for Norwich
By Chris,

Chelsea’s faint hopes of winning the Premier League title took a major blow on Saturday as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Norwich City. Elsewhere, on an exciting Saturday of Premier League action, Bolton secured an impressive 3-1 home win over Liveprool, whilst Fulham scored five second-half goals as they thumped Newcastle at Craven Cottage.

Bolton Wanderers 3-1 Liverpool
Owen Coyle’s Bolton pulled out of the relegation zone with victory in Saturday’s evening kick-off. Mark Davies and Nigel Reo-Coker put the hosts two up inside half-an-hour, and whilst Craig Bellamy scored for Liverpool, Gretar Steinsson bagged the winning goal for the Trotters and ensured Bolton bagged their first points against the Anfield club since 2006.

Everton 1-1 Blackburn Rovers
Steve Kean’s revival at Blackburn continues with a decent point at Goodison Park, though his side will finish the weekend back in the relegation zone. His Rovers side came from a goal behind, with David Goodwillie’s strike cancelling out Tim Cahill’s opener. Everton boss David Moyes described the draw as a fair result.

Fulham 5-2 Newcastle United
The Cottagers stunned the Toon with five second-half goals in an incredible game. Alan PArdew rued his side’s poor defending – as Danny Murphy’s penalty cancelled Danny Guthrie’s first-half strike for the visitors. After the break, Clint Dempsey bagged a hat-trick and Bobby Zamora scored a late penalty, with Ben Arfa’s goal ultimately proving only consolation for the Barcodes.

Norwich City 0-0 Chelsea
Chelsea could be 13 points off the pace at the end of the weekend following a goalless draw at Carrow Road. Ferdnando Torres continues to struggle in front of goal, and his Chelsea side failed to convert despite having 19 shots. Grant Holt had Norwich’s best side, as the Canaries were left to thank John Ruddy for an inspired performance between the sticks.

Queens Park Rangers 3-1 Wigan Athletic
Heidar Helguson and Akos Buzsaky put Rangers well on their way, but the Latics got back into the contest thanks to a fine free-kick from Hugo Rodallega. However, Tommy Smith’s winner sealed the points for QPR. The win makes it back-to-back successes for Mark Hughes, following an FA Cup triumph at home to Milton Keynes Dons.

Stoke City 1-2 West Bromwich Albion
The Baggies opened up a 7 point gap between themselves and the bottom three thanks to a huge away win at Stoke. Cameron Jerome looked to have rescued a point for the Potters with four minutes remaining as his goal cancelled out James Morrison’s opener, but WBA stunned the Britannia Stadium as Graham Dorran’s injury-time free-kick sent the points back to the Midlands.

Sunderland 2-0 Swansea City
Swansea City’s home record is the envy of much of the Premier League – but the newly-promoted South Walian outfit continue to struggle on the road. Stephane Sessegnon and Craig Gardner’s goals condemned the Swans to their seventh away league defeat of the campaign, and ensured Martin O’Neill’s impressive start to life with the Black Cats continues.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-3 Aston Villa
Robbie Keane, on loan at Villa from Los Angeles Galaxy, bagged two goals as Villa claimed an important win away at rivals Wolves. Darren Bent had put the visitors on their way with a penalty, before Michael Kightly and David Edwards turned the game on its head with goals for Mick McCarthy’s relegation-threatened men, but Keane’s second-half brace settled the game.

Saturday's dramatic Premier League action sets up an eagerly-anticipated double-header on Sunday. League leaders Manchester City host Spurs before, of course, United travel to Arsenal as Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger renew their fierce rivalry.
