United go back to the top as Rooney hits four!
By Roger O'Brien
January 23 2010
In the only Premier League fixture of the day - Wayne Rooney scored four goals to push Manchester United to the top of the league with a convincing victory over Hull City at Old Trafford. As title rivals Arsenal & Chelsea were on cup duty this weekend a win was all that was needed to put the team on the summit, and in doing so Rooney cemented his position as United's most influential player.

The statistics show Wayne Rooney getting the first goal after eight minutes when he slotted in a "rebound" after Paul Scholes' shot was saved. However as it was a gutsy display from the visitors meaning that United and Rooney had to wait until the last ten minutes for the floodgates to open.

On 82 minutes the much improved Nani's free-kick was saved, the ball hit the post and eventually found Rooney who smashed in a shot to make it 2-0 to the home side. The England international headed in Nani's cross to grab his third and the match ball, before firing in  a low shot to register four for the first time in a game.

Michael Owen struggled to find his shooting boots and was replaced by Berbatov. Rio Ferdinand and Darren Fletcher both started the game and lasted 90 minutes as did JS Park.

In summary it was the Wayne Rooney show - well done that man!

Off the pitch the number of gold and green scarves in the stands and chants about the owners proved that the protests are gathering momentum. The stalls outside the ground were doing a good trade in the new "old" colours!

Next up it's the Carling cup semi final v Manchester City on Wednesday.

The crowd was: 73,933
