Luton kicked off but neither side controlled the game early on and it took until the 8th minute for the first chance as Watkins hit a shot just wide of the post. The visitors did have the ball in the net when O’Connor headed in a corner, but the ball was adjudged to have gone out before coming back in.
Farman produced a double save to deny Willmott and Watkins before Power fired over with City’s first chance of the game. Watkins almost scored from a mishit cross before Power again hit wide from close range.
Gowling cleared a cross out to the left with the game approaching half time, the corner hit Power, landed to O’Connor who then passed to the unmarked Danny Crow and the one time Lincoln City transfer target hit home from just inside the six yard box.
Perry was lucky not to be booked for consistent fouls on Gleeson and ex-Imp Kovacs to end the half.
The ineffective Perry was taken off at the break and replaced by Francis Laurent, meaning City had no recognised strikers on the pitch. Ex-Imp Jamie Hand came on for Pilkington for the hosts.
Farman saved an O’Connor header early on in the second half before Nutter gave Pilkington an easy save in the Luton net. Thompson fired over from 35 yards when City were 3 on 1 with the Luton defence and the lack of strikers up front finally ended as Taylor returned from injury to replace Simon Russell.
Taylor was quickly in the action as he shot wide twice within the first few minutes. Howells was booked for a push on Christophe. Lawless also saw yellow after hacking down Taylor.
Willmott was booked for time wasting as he was substituted for Dance, but his time wasting proved to be a pointless endeavour as City scored from the free kick he had delayed the taking of. The free kick was given to Platt and he ran down the left, chipping the ball towards the back post and Hinds headed in for his first goal in City colours.
Sheridan replaced Christophe for City as Brunt replaced O’Connor for Luton. With Luton committing several fouls, it was inevitable they wouldn’t end the game with ten men and with five minutes to go, Lawless tripped Platt for his second yellow card.
Kovacs came close to scoring an own goal before Taylor and Platt shot wide from inside the area.
As the game was coming to an end another Luton man was sent of, this time it was ex-Imp Hand as he received a second yellow card.
