Leeds 4 Birmingham 0

Leeds bounced back from recent poor results, with a stunning 4-0 win over Birmingham yesterday.  Leeds started on top, and totally dominated the first half.  Playing in a new 3-5-2 formation, Brian McDermotts men ran riot.

Ross McCormack had the first chance, hitting the keeper when clear on goal.  Jason Pearce was next to miss an opportunity, heading over from 5 yards.  Rodolph Austin’s superb pass left McCormack with another chance, but his shot was again saved.  The opener had to come, and it did through a goal keeping mistake – as the keeper rushed from his line, he was left in  no mans land, and McCormack finished expertly from 25 yards as the defence tried to cover the open goal.  One goal soon became two.  McCormack turned provider, and his cross was met by Austin’s header to give Leeds some daylight.  Just before half time, Matty Smith grabbed a goal – McCormacks shot was saved, and Smith side footed home the rebound.

Birmingham made changes at half time and looked a better side.  They grew into the game, and had half chances.  Winger Burke, a Leeds target earlier in the year, looked their biggest threat, but the Whites defended really well – especially Tom Lees’ goal line clearance.  Paddy Kenny had to be alert to save from Zigic, and the visitors struck the post from a free kick – however, Leeds always looked likely to score – Austin was denied by a good save when clean through – Matty Smith denied by an even better save with  a good header.  Smith also had a goal ruled out from a tight offside call, before he did add to his tally, and Leeds’ 4th, when the impressive Mowett played in a great cross for the former Oldham striker to head home.

This is one game, and consistency has long been Leeds’ problem, but for the first time this season, we looked a real threat going forward.  This is the time we need to kick on and get on a little run…  Full time – Leeds 4 - Birmingham 0
