Kavanagh Call Up
By Ade O`Connor
October 2 2003
Cardiff City captain, Graham Kavanagh, has been named in the Ireland squad that will square off against Switzerland on October 11. The Bluebirds midfielder was last capped by his country four years ago, but wins a place in the squad following a string of outstanding performances.
Ireland must win the game in Berne to be sure of at least a play off place for the Euro 2004 tournament, so Kerr is delighted to welcome back key striker Robbie Keane.

The Tottenham forward was injured playing for his country against Australia over a month ago. Since his return, he has been a regular in the Spurs side, who are without a manager.

Regular Republic of Ireland captain Kenny Cunningham does not figure in the squad, as he will be suspended for the fixture, though he may travel to Switzerland in a non-playing role.

Manchester City defender Richard Dunne is also ruled out through injury, although he was unlikely to feature in the first team, despite scoring the equaliser in the friendly versus Turkey some weeks ago.

Gary Breen has recovered from an injury that at one time looked like ruling him out of the vital match, he will be important in leading the defensive line in the absense of captain Cunningham; Matt Holland is expected to be given the armband for the match.

Stephen McPhail is rewarded for his form on loan at Nottingham Forest, from the troubled Leeds United, with a chance to play a role in the qualifying effort.
