Full back Gareth Evans, former Leeds United youngster, is facing the prospect of having to undergo surgery on his knee.

Evans, 21, has not yet taken part in a pre-season friendly or even a practice match and Wadsworth hoped he would make it for the Brentford game, sadly not.

He has recently had an injection that was supposed to kill the pain but that didn't exactly go to plan and now him having to go "under the knife" is looking ever likelier.

In an interview with Planet Football Wadsworth said:

"Gareth has not responded to treatment, so it looks as if the next step may be surgery."

"It's a big disappointment for both him and us. Our physios have done thorough checks on his knee, but he's still got the niggle."

The defender had 32 starts for us last season so the news will come as a blow to Wadsworth because he is likely to miss the start of the season.  Fortunately, we have adequate backup in the form of  ex-Wigan defender Kevin Sharp, who covers Evans' position perfectly.  But if Sharp performs well and impresses Wadsworth then he could knock Gareth Evans onto the bench.
