Sweeney - two goals
County were admittedly poor, but they had won their previous two games and are in a comfortable position in mid-table – clearly that isn’t good enough for them.
Pools were streets ahead for most of the game, Antony Sweeney heading in an Evan Horwood cross in the first half and slotted a second ten minutes into the second half after a cross from Neil Austin.
The game was over from then on, but Sweeney set up Andy Monkhouse to curl in the third and Allen’s number was up.
Pools boss Neale Cooper will have more sympathy for Allen than most after admitting during the week that he has a lot of respect for his opposite number.
But he was more interested in talking about his team’s performance. He told the club website: “They gave everything at Preston on Tuesday, and they’ve gone to a different level today.
“It’s just so pleasing for me to watch that and see the fighting spirit they have for each other. I don’t know what more to say – I’m just proud of every one of them.”
He was impressed by the way Pools got to grips with a team he rates highly and with the way the defence kept another clean sheet in trying conditions.
They’ll need all the qualities they showed in this game when they go to Wycombe next weekend and Bury the following Tuesday night. Pools are ninth in the table, seven points behind the play-offs.
After dropping an amazing 30 points at home this season, the players don’t need telling where they could be.
