Newcastle lose 1-0 to Fulham in end of season battle

Schwarzer Saves

May 16 2009

Newcastle lose 1-0 in a match filled with controversy, as Fulham retain 7th place in the Premier League. They are now guaranteed their best finish in top flight history as they can only finish 8th or 7th. Newcastle now have a battle to remain a Premier League club as Hull got a point. Fulham with their third away win, came as Newcastle could have had a draw but for a disallowed goal

    A couple of early attempts by Kamara and Dempsey at the Newcastle goal were wide of the mark, and it was Newcastle who had the first serious shot on goal, but Mark Schwarzer always had it covered. Newcastle's best chance came a few minutes later when Martins found himself in a great position, but smashed the Fulham goal post and out of danger.  Gera had a good chance a couple of minutes later, but although on target, it did not trouble Harper due to the lack of pace on the shot.  The Toon Army became surprisingly quiet later on in the first half, and it was a link up of Nevland and Kamara that silenced them on the 40 minute mark.  Demsey and Murphy played their part in setting up Eric Nevland. He dribbled round the Newcastle defence and could have had a shot on goal, but saw Kamara out to his left and selflessly passed the ball.  Kamara calmly steadied the ball and struck it high into the top of the Magpies' net.

                                               The disallowed goal

The second half may have been without a goal but was not without some excitement. Dickson Etuhu made a remarkable clearance off the line which led to a Newcastle corner. The ball came on and Viduka fired the ball into the Fulham net, but the goal was disallowed by the ref. Was there a foul by Viduka, or was it Nolan? Mark Schwarzer was appealing before the ball was centred. I think he was impeded, or had his shirt pulled. The replays will show it one way or the other, but both the referee and Mark Schwarzer seemed to think so, and the goal did not stand, much to the disbelief of Alan Shearer and the Home crowd.  Thirteen minutes later Kamara looked to be away on goal having run past Bassong to get the ball in the final quarterof the pitch. Bassong then looked to pull Kamara's shirt and then caught his heel when attempting a late sliding tackle. The referee did not hesitate, and brought out a red card. Newcastle's hopes were almost over.

    Fulham should really have finished the game off with another goal, but couldn't make it happen.  Newcastle were the ones who had the best chance after 77 mins when an excellent shot by Martins was brilliantly save by Schwarzer.

   Fulham played well throughout the game, as did Newcastle. I felt that The magpies never had the belief in themselves as a team to overcome a confident Cottagers side. Martins will be a player to look out for next season if Newcastle go down, as he was head and shoulders above the other Toon players. I wonder whose shopping list he'll be on.  Bobby Zamora did not play, and probably a good thing too. Nevland and Kamara always looked dangerous, and linked up well for the only goal of the game. Kamara seems to have turned from a selfish individualist with occasional flashes of brilliance, to a team player, and a great addition to Roy's side. Hodgson can be thanked for that!

 The Super Fulham three stars are:

*      Nevland/Kamara - yes a joint star for a great joint effort!

**    Clint Dempsey - Played very well throughout the game, always commited and involved in setting up attacks. Adds his own shots at goal too - Great Value

***  Mark Schwarzer - Yet again , he has shown what a great signing he is. 15 Clean Sheets this season. He's shut out some of the best attacks in the country, anchoring Fulham's best back 4 in quite some time
