Another Away Defeat For Coventry City

Coventry City threw away a life-line in their bid to avoid relegation, with another late surrender, this time away at Blackpool.

Leading one-nil with only minutes to go, just about everybody thought taking off an attacking player and replacing them with a more defensive minded player was the best option. But, the one person given the chance to make such a change, opted not to. And with that, Andy Thorn blew the chance for Coventry City to finally win away.

Connor Thomas's first goal for the club on 58 minutes gave Coventry supporters hopes of victory, before Blackpool brought on Kevin Phillips. This saw a lot of Coventry supporters thinking a draw would be OK, as he scored his compulsory goal against us (Plus having an earlier effort chalked off for offside), before Taylor-Fletcher's late, late winner said otherwise.

The chance to move to to the top of the bottom pile (22nd of 24!) was missed, and Coventry City remain seven points adrift of fourth bottom Millwall.

TEAM: Murphy, Keogh, Hreidarsson, Christie, Cranie, Thomas (Bell 92), Deegan, Clingan, McSheffrey, Platt, Nimely (Wood 80). SNU: Dunn, Baker.

To be honest though Sid we've tried the 'bring on a defensive player and shut up shop' tactic for years and that hasn't worked either. Fans, myself included, have got extremely frustrated at the team dropping far too deep late on and inviting pressure on themselves, leading to the inevitable goal being conceded.

I think keeping a couple of players, particularly quick ones, up during the last few minutes can help because the defence are wary about getting caught on the break with a long hoof over the top so drop back a bit, meaning everyone else has to drop back a bit too to prevent gaps appearing.

It's more the complete lack of confidence in this team that they expect to concede that it's become a self-fulfilling prophecy whether we look to catch people on the break or defend the lead. We could brick the goal up and we'd somehow still find a way to concede.
