Some will point to the fact we've got a whole extra point more than last season, and still have a game to play (A game where I fully expect an Ipswich side, under management, to rip a Coventry side, who look as if they couldn't give a s***, a new a-hole). Well wuppidy-doo. Equally as dull people will waffle on about injuries too. Huge yawn.
The ease with which a urine poor Watford side, who never particularly looked like scoring, were able to put the ball in the Coventry net three times was embarrassing, as once again a pathetic collapse cost the home side any of the points on offer. The three points taken from the eighteen on offer against Palace, Plymouth Charlton, Forest, Barnsley, and Watford, is absolutely unacceptable.
Once again playing in the infamous Chocolate Brown kit (As apparently asked for by home supporters. Who exactly requested this? Can anybody name any of these people?) - that wasn't a replica of the kit worn in the late 70s, despite reports saying it was - the home defence looked every bit as ropey as the side humiliated 7-1 at the hands of WBA playing in the same colours all those years ago.
Things looked okay with ten minutes played, as the home side finally managed to score a goal in open play, with a neat bit of inter-play resulting in a goal - finally! - for Freddie Eastwood. Things looked even better when a quality Robbie Simpson free-kick after 53 minutes made the score 2-0. But even at 2-0, the home side never looked convincing, as Watford continually walked through the home midfield and defence.
McPake replaced Ward at half-time (With Coleman stating in an after-match interview that this was down to injury, and not just down to the fact he doesn't seem to rate him), and with Ward went any semblance of acceptable defending (Not that the home side looked that good in the first half, but they were certainly more solid than when McPake entered the fray).
Ben Turner gifted Watford a way back into the match, conceding a penalty which Smith converted (As he did in the earlier fixture at Vicarage Road), though not before Westwood had saved his initial effort, with Watford's players far more bothered about getting to the rebound than anybody wearing brown. Raziak made it 2-2 soon after, and with all the predictability that goes with a Coventry City season, goal three for the away side soon followed.
Priskin had been given the freedom of the penalty area seconds before goal number three, and failed to hit the target, but the home side didn't learn their lesson, and within the space of sixteen minutes, Coventry City had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Again. That makes it five defeats in a row against a very average Watford side.
What happened for the last 18 minutes I don't properly know, as, having had enough of this season to last me for quite a while, I decided that suffering this garbage until full-time, and being trapped in the car park for half-an-hour plus, just wasn't worth the bother (So I half listened to the commentary on CWR). Having seen pictures of the players lap of dis-honour, it seems I wasn't alone in leaving early.
With Stuart Pearce said to be amongst the crowd, he won't have been overly pleased to see Dan Fox sent off for an offence which it seems most people missed - especially me, as I was just pulling into my drive when it happened, having witnessed yet another match that will have done little to persuade people to buy season tickets for the next chapter in our disappointing history....
The trick this summer will be to persuade those players who for most of the season have looked worthy of the shirt (Though even they seem to have given up recently), and get rid - once again - of what is quite clearly a lot of dead-wood, else another season of struggle is on the cards. Hanging on to all four of Westwood, Fox, Dann, and Gunnarsson (Not to mention realising Ward is probably worth the bother too), is about as likely as finding an XI for next season that actually care about the club as much as the supporters do.
Included on that list for the 'exit' door will hopefully be Ben Turner, who needs to at least go out on loan somewhere for a while. I've defended him in the past, but he's not upto the task of playing in the Championship, and must have gifted the opposition a dozen goals this season. Marcus Hall certainly isn't worth another twelve month contract either (With Fox's sending off meaning if Hall stays, he will more than likely start next season - a frightening prospect).
As for Isaac Osbourne, what happened to the chance in the centre of midfield he was supposed to be given? Had he been given the opportunity, Coleman could have seen whether he needs to waste money on another central midfielder over the summer, or whether IO is a decent replacement for Doyle. He probably isn't, but if you don't try, you don't find out....
In midfield, Beuzelin certainly isn't good enough to run the midfield as we need him to (So forget the extra year option, as he isn't an impact player either, so isn't worth a place on the bench), while Simpson looks out of his depth playing wide right. And Michael Doyle has had more than enough time at the club to prove his worth, but hasn't, so it's time to say 'goodbye'. Goodbye Michael.
Up front, Morrison spends more time complaining than contributing (Though admittedly the service to him is dire), while Best and Eastwood don't look as if they will score enough goals to help our cause either. Two out, one decent one in would be preferable....
TEAM: Westwood, Osbourne (Grandison 90), Hall, Ward (McPake 46), Turner, Eastwood, Gunnarsson, Doyle, Fox, Simpson (Cain 76), Morrison. SNU: Ireland, Thornton.
