Australian defender Aaron Downes has signed for the Spireites after verbally agreeing on a deal. The centre-back is hoping to use Chesterfield as a stepping stone to his future, but would like to earn another contract here first.
Speaking to the official Chesterfield FC website, Downes said, "Chesterfield have given me an opportunity and I am hoping to impress the manager enough to earn a longer team deal. It has been my boyhood dream to play in England so I am hoping that this will be fulfilled and see this is an important first step on the way."
On his new accuisition, boss Roy McFarland had this to say, "We want to take a closer look at what he has to offer over the next three months with the possibility that the contract could be extended."
Downes is obviously keen to play and it should be interesting to see if him and Kevin Dawson can push Steve Blatherwick and Ian Evatt out of the side.
