Curle, Hollins, Brown or Bell?
By Chris Thompson
April 27 2005
Chester have announced that a new manager will be appointed this coming Friday morning. Whoever is appointed will become city's 3rd manager this season
Chairman Stephen Vaughan has been in search of a new manager since Ian Rush left the club following the decision from the board to sack his assistant, Mark Aizlewood earlier this month. Since then, Vaughan received over 30 applications, but that list has since narrowed down to just 4, consisting, it is believed of former Mansfield boss Keith Curle, former Chelsea and Swansea boss, John Hollins, Owen Brown of Vauxhall Motors, and caretaker manager, David Bell.
It is well known however that Curle lies as favourite to succeed the former Liverpool ace, with Hollins not far behind, and Brown an outsider.
Curle, who became Britain’s most expensive defender when he moved to Manchester City in 1991 for £2.5million, was sacked by Mansfield after allegations he bullied a trainee into completing a weightlifting circuit. He was appointed Stags boss in December ’02, and, after failing to keep his new club in League 1, guided Mansfield to the playoffs the following year, and in this season, was sacked as Mansfield boss with his side lying just 2 points beneath the playoffs.
John Hollins MBE, meanwhile, had a glittering career, making almost 1,000 appearances for Chelsea, Arsenal and Queen’s Park Rangers. He became player-manager of Chelsea in 1983, and went full-time two years later, having promoted them to top-flight football.
He later became manager of the QPR reserves, and won the league twice in three years, and more recently promoted Swansea city to League 1 in the millennium year after falling at the play-offs the previous season.

After guiding Chester to one win, a draw and a defeat, David Bell and Clive Goodyear are due to assist the new manager
By now, it is likely that Chester’s third manager in less than one season will know his position, but there won’t be a public announcement until Friday morning, and Saturday, Chester’s final home game of the season, will see the new gaffer presented to the crowd.

Said Vaughan, "The decision has been made and we're going to move on it. David (Bell) will be part of the new coaching team but an official announcement will be made on Friday.
"We had the shortlist down to just two names but the decision has now been made."
