MORECAMBE 3-2 CHESTER CITY - 07/12/02
Morecambe booked thier place in the 3rd round with a 3-2 victory over title chasing Chester City in front of over 4000 supporters.

The early stages of the game saw Chester carve out of the best chances with Daryl Clare finding himself free at the back post from a free kick but his goalbound effort was tipped round the post by Craig Mawson.

It was Chester who took the lead on 24 minutes when a Kevin McIntyre corner was headed home by Phil Bolland.

Their lead lasted only 3 minutes as Adriano Rigoglioso's free kick was volleyed home by Jim Bentley.

Daryl Clare put the away side back in front 5 minutes before half time when Morecambe failed to clear the ball from their own penalty area giving Clare an empty net to aim at. Despite the best efforts of Iain Swan and Lee Colkin on the line, they couldn't keep the ball out of the net.

In first half injury time Chester were reduced to 10 men. After Lee Colkin and Ryan Sugden were competing for the ball the two squared up to each other and Sugden headbutted Colkin. The referee had no choice but to send off Chester's leading scorer.

Morecambe were level a couple of minutes later. Adriano Rigoglioso's corner was volleyed into the back of the net by Jim Bentley who scored his second of the game to send the teams in level at half time.

The second half saw Morecambe throw everything they had at Chester in search of a third goal. Adriano Rigoglioso went close on 45 minutes when he turned his marked but his shot was weak and was no problem for Wayne Brown in the Chester goal.

On 56 minutes Morecambe were in front when Adriano Rigoglioso found himself in plenty of space in the penalty area and his shot found the back of the net.

The 10 men of Chester then went of the offensive and Morecambe spent the majority of the second half playing on the counter attack. Despite Chester's pressure they never created anything that troubled Craig Mawson and it was Morecambe who should have had another goal on their tally.

Adriano Rigoglioso broke down the left wing and drilled the ball across the face of the goal to Wayne Curtis at the back post but his shot went wide of the opposite post.

The last few minutes were tense for Morecambe fans as Chester had a series of corners but they failed to turn any of them into goal scoring chances and Morecambe hung on for the win.

Jim Harvey's side will now be looking forward to tomorrow's draw which could see them drawn against one of the Premiership big guns.
