Chelsea Conquer Depleted Tottenham

By Gary Watton

Chelsea deservedly progressed to yet another cup final, while Tottenham Wannabes successfully avoided silverware yet again. The contest should have been put to bed long before the drama of a penalty shootout, but Chelsea wouldn't be Chelsea if they didn't make life difficult for themselves. Monsieur Giroud, soon to be displaced by the recently-arrived Higuain proved to be as wasteful in front of goals again, thereby vindicating his manager's evident lack of faith in him. In truth, this match almost certainly was a play-off to determine who would be runners-up to hot favourites Manchester Mercenaries on the last Sunday in February. Still, it's good for club morale to have a big day out at Wembley stadium to look forward to. I just cannot see how we can beat Manchester Mercenaries twice in the same season. This win, good though it was, still doesn't paper over the cracks.

Nevertheless, a big handclap is allocated to young Arrizabalaga for a fine penalty save against Lucas Moura, and to our four penalty heroes who each coolly slotted home their spot kick: Willian, captain Azpilicueta, Obi Mikel Jorginho, and David Luiz. Earlier, Kante had drilled a shot from the edge of the penalty area through a sea of legs and in off the goalkeeper into the net. Shortly afterwards, Hazard stuck out his left foot to expertly steer the ball into the corner of the net. A much-improved Tottenham quickly responded after the interval, courtesy of a close range effort from Llorentes. Thereafter the match ebbed and flowed, but it was the hosts who uncharacteristically prevailed in a penalty shootout. Unless they show some much-needed consistency, they can expect to collect losers' medals on Sunday the 23rd of February.
