Further Goal Shy Woes

By Gary Watton

Chelsea dominating possession but failing to turn pressure into goals is becoming an all-too-familiar story. This semi final first leg demonstrated the real need for a target man in the penalty area. Otherwise the team is restricted to trying to pass their way into the opposition goals. It comes to something when your biggest goal threat ends up being the excellent Kante. However, the hosts defended with great gusto. They observed the rule that if you can't keep the ball (and they couldn't) then make sure that you're good without it. In the end, Chelsea might have been mugged with a breakaway goal which would have been an absolute travesty.

At least young Hudson-Odoi, granted a rare start, did not look out of place in this major cup tie. He eclipsed the performance of the ineffective Willian, prompting Pedro to replace the latter rather than the former. Giroud or Morata must start in the second leg. That is a must. The Blues will probably need to score at least twice in the return leg, but this looks a tall order if last night was anything to go by. That said, the home team rode their luck, with the visitors twice hitting the woodwork while Tottenham's goal was the product of an emphatic penalty from Harry Kane. The question is can we expect Tottenham to be so poor (and so lucky) next time around?

Of course Chelsea need to find a new prolific striker, but their recruitment decisions have been so poor of late, that their forays into the transfer market fill one with trepidation. I'm just glad that it isn't my money that they are wasting.
