A Double From Morata!

By Gary Watton

Double helpings from Alvaro Morata are as rare as the proverbial hen's teeth. Today was one such occasion when the Spanish marksman earned his inflated salary with two decent strikes which significantly twice gave the hosts the lead, either side of half time and either side of a fine goal by Andros Townsend.

It took the home team a full half hour to impose themselves upon this contest. Until then, the Eagles had given a very good account of themselves. However crucially the visitors could not capitalise by getting their noses in front. Instead, it was an off-colour Chelsea that broke the deadlock. Then when Palace found an equaliser, they briefly looked capable of going on to win. Eventually an exasperated Sarri hauled off Barkley and Willian, hoping that Hazard and Kovacic would transform the dynamic of the match. Soon after, it was an unmarked Morata who expertly fired home from a free kick. A few minutes later Pedro sweetly sidefooted an Alonso pass into the corner of the net. This double whammy knocked the stuffing out of Palace's challenge. Whilst the latter petered out, the home team finished strongly. They have this quality of knocking the ball nonchalantly to and fro before finding a channel to play the ball through or to burst through with a sudden acceleration, turning an innocuous kick about into a lethal attack.

Morata in the last move of the match missed a glorious opportunity to clinch a hat trick. He really needs to practise one on one situations when he bears down upon a goalkeeper. He probably costs about half a dozen goals per season with this failing. He remains a frustrating figure who possesses a talent for missing easy chances. Nevertheless he's enjoying a decent goalscoring spell which will do wonders for his fragile confidence.

Chelsea meanwhile have climbed to second position in the English charts. Whether or not they actually go on to win the league, their challenge has much credibility and the Blues look like they are in it for the long haul.
