Another Impotent Nightmare

The Blues' late-season charge towards an unlikely Champions League spot finally fizzled out at home to lowly Huddersfield Town who deservedly secured Premier League survival, courtesy of a gritty defensive display against one-goal Chelsea. The proceedings perfectly encapsulated Chelsea's inability to create chances and convert the rare ones that they do produce. The team has completely lost the knack of scoring late winners or equalisers when the chips are down. This has been the most frustrating of seasons, as the purgatory of the Europa League beckons for last season's champions. How the mighty have fallen and indeed been washed away.

The manager isn't exactly blameless. He rested Hazard and played Pedro. Hopefully this was Pedro's final start for Chelsea. He doesn't justify his high wages, as he is too peripheral and totally lacking in influence upon a match. Zappacosta replaced Moses, with the former having a stinker, unable to beat the opposing full back and his attempted crosses were woeful. The value of Moses has never seemed so high to the Blues.

Spare a thought for Willian. He tried, along with the energetic Kante and Fabregas, to conjure something. The Brazilian ace looked so frantic and anxious during the stalemate that he looked desperately like someone who didn't want to end up in the Europa League. Maybe we shouldn't be surprised if he relocates to a club that can provide Champions League football. As for Conte, the prolonged FA Cup campaign has probably extended his tenure at Stamford Bridge by one week. Maybe Chelsea are saving all their goals for that occasion.....
