A Brilliant Comeback In Madrid

By Gary Watton
September 27 2017

Handicapped by playing away from home in the hostile environment of Atletico's new stadium and then further disadvantaged when Sideshow Bob conceded a stupid penalty, Chelsea nonetheless came back from an interval deficit to emerge with all three points in this potentially pivotal clash. To come top of this group would be desirable, as it would probably mean less lethal opposition in the last sixteen, and well the Londoners went a long way towards securing first position with this impressive triumph.

Although the winning strike from supersub Batshuayi came literally with the last kick of the match, this was no smash and grab robbery. Instead, Conte's team played with much attacking intent both at nil-nil and obviously when they went behind just before half time. Hazard was back to his buzzing best. Morata headed home the equaliser after a few attempts on goal. The ex-Real Madrid player took much pleasure from scoring against Real's city rivals.

Atletico in recent years have cultivated a reputation as being amongst Europe's elite, so this was a big statement from Chelsea. If they can stay clear of too many injuries, the visitors can go a long way in this competition. They certainly seem well capable of battling on both domestic and European fronts. There is certainly no evidence whatsoever that the class of 2017 is going to implode any time soon, as predicted by some doom-mongers in the summer.
