Chelsea to move on Maicon after failed Johnson bid?

After losing out to Liverpool for the signature of former right-back Glen Johnson, Chelsea could be looking to involve Inter right-back Maicon in complex game of musical chairs between the two clubs.

Maicon has said he is unhappy about a “lack of recognition” for his efforts at Inter (translated I think that would mean he wants a pay-rise).

According to many reports, Chelsea would have faced competition from Real Madrid should we make any move for Maicon but Inter president has just eliminated that potential obstacle:

"Branca’s trip to Madrid was determined long ago and the reason was to talk about Maicon," said Moratti."

But fortunately, Florentino is barely interested in defenders."

I don’t get the “fortunately” bit – if Inter really are interested in selling Maicon - or perhaps he is just making a joke about a weak-link in a star-studded Real Madrid line-up?

Maicon throws up his hands in frustration
Many Chelsea fans weren’t that convinced that we should buy back Johnson due to his tendency to lose concentration in key areas.  Maicon is the player that most preferred, whilst the club seemed more enthusiastic about acquiring another English player with its consequential benefits re UEFA current and potential rules.

Mourinho has confirmed that Deco and Carvalho are on his shopping list and these two players could be important bargaining chips in a move for the right-back - and even Ibrahimovic.  The acquisition of the latter could even signal Drogba, also wanted by Mourinho, going the other way – meaning a total transaction involving five players.

"If an attractive offer comes in, well, in this world, everything is bought and everything is sold," agent Antonio Caliendo said in Calico Mercato.

"I believe Ancelotti is one of Maicon's biggest admirers.

"He is open to offers from everyone.

"(Inter president, Massimo) Moratti is taking the right decision to assess the bids.

"Maicon is happy at Inter, but the transfer window lasts a long time.

"Something can happen every day, but for now there has been no decision."

Were we definitely in for Johnson?

RAFA BENITEZ admits he paid over the odds to land Glen Johnson.

The Liverpool boss has agreed to hand Portsmouth £18.5million to sign the England right-back.

Manchester City’s late attempt to hijack the deal drove the price up and pocketed Johnson a £90,000-a-week, four-year deal.

But Benitez admitted: “Sometimes you have to spend a little bit more.

“You can’t compete in the top four of the Premier League unless you spend some money.

“We were looking for a player of quality and also somebody who is British because of the new Champions League rules. Johnson fits both categories.”

Another right back? I'm not so sure that we should be spending ridiculous amounts of money on another right back when we have bosingwa. Mancienne should be given a chance to have a go at the first team spot! We need to bring through the youth instead of spending huge amounts on average players AGAIN!!!
