Chelsea in advanced stages of £44m Ribery deal

The Independent are reporting that Peter Kenyon is in the final stages of a deal with Bayern Munich to sign Frank Ribery. If true, this could also serve to indicate that Carlo Ancelotti is soon to be appointed as our next manager given that in the Italians recently released autobiography, Ancelotti reveals that Ribery is one of the players he would require.
Then again, it might also mean that even though Ancelotti is NOT to join Chelsea, Abramovich has taken free advice and is trying to sign him anyway – many Chelsea fans would hope that this is the case.

The figures being quoted are eye-opening.  The report states that negotiations started some weeks ago and that the French midfielder wants £6m a year. Chelsea apparently have offered an annual net salary of €5.5m (£4.7m) but Ribery wants €7m (£6m) and this is proving to be a serious sticking point.

Manchester United are also supposedly after Ribéry although this seems to depend on the future of Ronaldo who no appears to want to stay at Old Trafford.  Ferguson´s offer is said to be even higher than Chelsea’s – a whopping €70m (£62.5m) - but the funds from a deal with Real Madrid for Ronaldo would have made sure they would have been able to outbid any other club for Ribery´s services.

The current world transfer record is the £46m paid by Real Madrid for Zinedine Zidane in 2001.

Hasn't Kenyon got plans for Chelsea to be breaking even by the end of next season? Certainly looks that way...

Yes (well 2010 or 2011).

That said, Buck and Kenyon have been saying for years that IF the right player (a big player) was available for the right price then they would make an exception in their budgeting. This was demoinstrated with the bids for Alves and then later Robinho.

a bit expensive but a quality...quality player. He can beat people, can score goals and has a great right foot. This is the type of player that we have missed this season. Him and joe cole on the wings is mouthwatering.

Would like us to get another striker..even if we dont sell anyone. Some one who is happy to sit on the bench for a larger part of the season and come in when needed.

Also need anothe left back in my opinion. Again, someone who is happy to be backup.

The Times has him going to Real Madrid - although I think they got their story from Marca which is very pro-Madrid and there are elections going on at the moment.
