By dixon9 February 5 2009 New Chelsea signing Ricardo Quaresma has been on the radar of some Chelsea fans ever since we lost Arjen Robben – some in favour, many not. Then last summer all the talk was about Robinho. The last hour collapse of that deal made many wonder why we didn’t have a back-up plan - Ricardo Carvalho revealed that we may just well have done.
"At different times with the Portugal national team he would always ask about English football and was interested in what it was like.”
"He could have come here last summer but he ended up going to Inter Milan with Jose Mourinho - but it has not worked out for him there.
Of course, maybe it’s a bit unfair to criticise the club on the back-up issue given that Man City suddenly becoming extremely cash rich was not predicted by anybody but it certainly is interesting that Quaresma was considered – probably if the Robinho deal collapsed earlier.
Quaresma in January not knee-jerk
.
It could also be possible therefore that the Quaresma deal to Chelsea was something club suits had been working on for some time during the January transfer window and not a sudden last minute reaction to poor results.
.
Interestingly, Quaresma´s squad number is 18 - number 7, Robinho´s number, is still reserved.
Quaresma will make the difference
Carvalho also praised the player’s ability and feels Quaresma will make an impact:
"Quaresma is a very fast and explosive player who is a real warrior on the pitch, so he will be able to handle the physical nature of the Premier League but at the same time he is a very technical player and can score goals, which will be good for us.”
"He will be a huge help to us at this time of the season.”
"He is a very attacking player and that is what we need at Chelsea at the moment."
"He will add more pace, which is important. Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba will love playing with him because he gets a lot of assists.
“Scolari knows Quaresma well and this is an advantage for us.
"He also knows a lot of players here already, but he will need time to adapt.
Time to revive
"We have to be strong between now and the end of the season after the defeat to Liverpool.
(due to us not getting Robinho in the summer - he was "supposed" to have that one).
.
"It is born out of hypocrisy and fundamental insecurity. There have been two kids on the block for the past 12 years. Suddenly, there is a third and that one is threatening to be more successful than the others and they don’t like it." P Kenyon.
right so i see what you saying, maybe try get him of shi ty in summer maybe. just seems strange to be holding on to it,
do you think there is long term behind the doors deal to get him in summer?
I would imagine so - whether we get him or not is another matter. We´d probably have to trade a big pound of flesh in exchange (eg. Drogba).
