Charlton 2, Huddersfield 1; Addicks Win and Top the Table

A good day for Sodje
By Nick Blackbourn
October 18 2009
Following last week's somewhat disappointing draw with Oldham, Charlton sought a maximum return this time at the Valley. Huddersfield provided stiff opposition but the Addicks did enough to reach 28 points and top the table, though Leeds have two games in hand.

An opportunity to head the table was not enough to spur Charlton on to victory last weekend, though the chance this time was taken. Sam Sodje's goal in the eighth minute ensured there would be no repeat of a goalless draw. Sodje's power in the air was utilised to great effect when he met Matt Spring's corner to open the game's scoring.

The Addicks then struggled to cope with a good Huddersfield side and it was not a surprise when Anthony Pilkington scored an equaliser from a 25 yard free kick. Charlton were grateful for the half time whistle, which gave a chance to regroup and reassert authority on the game in the second half.

Parkinson's half time adjustments worked to great effect as Izale McLeod scored his third goal of the season just four minutes into the second half. Christian Dailly's free kick was flicked on by the influential Sodje, McLeod then rose to put Charlton ahead.

Huddersfield did not lay down and die and both sides had further chances. David Mooney made his Charlton debut and looked like he will add to the Addicks front line.

Scott Wagstaff was given the chance from the bench to further his claim to Lloyd Sam's berth wide in midfield. Sam, as always, showed flashes of excellence but did not make a telling contribution to the scoreline.

Leeds play Norwich on Monday night, the first of their two games in hand on Charlton. They will hope to reclaim first spot in League One, while Charlton will now hope to retain their winning ways and solidify their position in the top two.

Next up for Charlton is Gillingham away. Some may view this as a derby of sorts, given Charlton's Kent catchment area, but three points will be priority number one for Parkinson.
