Charlton 0, Oldham, 0: Addicks Miss Chance to Top League One

Llera returns to the team

Charlton were held by a resolute Oldham Athletic side to earn themselves a point and deny the Addicks the chance to head League One. This was only the second time this season Charlton had failed to earn maximum points at home after the draw against Southampton.

With an international weekend, the Charlton/Oldham fixture was perhaps the biggest domestic fixture on Saturday. A three goal win would have sent Charlton top above Leeds but Oldham had other plans.

Dave Penney's side came to the Valley to secure a point and they went about their business professionally. The pace of the game was lowered; set pieces and throw-ins were 'carefully considered' before enacted. Plenty of men behind the ball invited Charlton to try and break down the Latics.

Unfortunately for Charlton, Sam, Bailey and Shelvey were unable to carve out an opening for the all important first goal. Bailey looked uncharacteristically out of sorts, Shelvey was man-marked all afternoon by Jon Worthington.

Izale McLeod had the best chance of the game when he found himself in space inside the Oldham box but his shot blazed over. Youga and Bailey also went close but the goal never came.

Oldham deserve credit for a good tactical performance. They came for a point and managed to hold back Charlton and did have chances to secure a unlikely smash-and-grab victory.

Charlton will need to get used to away sides approaching games at the Valley as Oldham did. Breaking down resolute defences will require the likes of Bailey, Shelvey and Sam to find that killer ball for a goal. Leon McKenzie looked sharp in his first Charlton game and will surely feature in the coming weeks and months.

Charlton will hope Leeds slip up in their game in hand. Bristol Rovers have the chance to level their points total with their own game in hand. Huddersfield at home is next up for the Addicks.

Let's hope Charlton get on another winning streak right about now!
